30 Days to 5 Years | Day 26

Almost five years ago, I had a lot of plans.

Today, I still do.

But I've learned to hold them with open hands.

People ask me what I hope the next five years will look like.

The truth is, wherever God leads, I want to follow.

Sure, I have dreams.

I can't wait to see where The Healthcare GreenBook™ goes.

I'm excited to finally cross the finish line and earn my PhD.

I'm hopeful about the doors that will open and the people I have yet to meet.

But if these last five years have taught me anything, it's this:

God has consistently exceeded my plans.

So while I dream, I also trust.

While I prepare, I remain open.

While I hope, I embrace uncertainty.

Because some of the greatest blessings in my life were things I never saw coming.

And if I know one thing for sure, it's this:

The best is yet to come.

30 Days to 5 Years | Day 25

Almost five years ago, I thought success meant balance.

Today, I think success means harmony.

Because if I'm honest, balance isn't always possible.

Some seasons require more from work.

Some seasons require more from family.

Some seasons require rest.

And some seasons require faith.

Losing people I love has taught me something I wish I had learned sooner:

Time is precious.

Who you spend it with matters.

Where you spend it matters.

What you spend it on matters.

Success to me now looks like making good use of my time with the right people, in the right places, doing the right things.

It looks like laughter.

Meaningful work.

Good friends.

A relationship with God.

Rest.

Travel.

Music.

Family.

Service.

And having enough wisdom to know that not every opportunity deserves a "yes."

Five years later, I don't want a perfectly balanced life.

I want a harmonious one.

And I'm grateful to be learning what that looks like.

30 Days to 5 Years | Day 24

Almost five years ago, I thought success would look like one big moment.

Today, I realize success has looked more like thousands of small moments that added up.

Over the last five years, I've had the honor of:

• Presenting at Yale.
• Becoming an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider and providing trainings across the country.
• Participating in the Goldman Sachs One Million Black Women: Black in Business program.
• Progressing toward my PhD (still in progress, but getting closer!).
• Speaking to clinicians, students, and communities I never imagined I would reach.
• Winning the Start.Pivot.Grow. pitch competition and receiving $20,000 to invest in a dream.
• Learning to embrace power, pivots, and possibility.
• Continuing to say "yes" even when adversity whispered "quit."

But honestly?

The accomplishments I treasure most will never fit neatly on a résumé.

Clients choosing life.

Goals being met.

Trauma being healed.

Hope being restored.

Relationships deepening.

And learning that success doesn't require sacrificing joy.

I've somehow managed to nurture friendships, travel, continue piano lessons, and enjoy this one beautiful life while building businesses, pursuing a doctorate, and serving others.

Five years later, I'm proud of the accomplishments.

But I'm even more grateful that I didn't lose myself trying to achieve them.

One of the most common experiences I see across clients is loneliness.

And despite being more connected through technology than ever before, many people feel deeply disconnected.

Men are not immune to that.

In fact, many men were socialized to rely on activities rather than conversations for connection.

As life gets busier, friendships often become harder to maintain.

Yet meaningful relationships remain one of the strongest protective factors for mental health.

Connection matters.

Not because people are weak.

Because people are human.

Challenge:
Reach out to one friend this week...not because you need something, but simply to connect.

30 Days to 5 Years | Days 22 & 23

Almost five years ago, I thought success would be measured by credentials, accomplishments, and outcomes.

Today, I think success is measured by relationships.

As I reflect on this journey, I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude for the people who have allowed me to step into their lives and the people who have stepped into mine.

Over the years, attendees have shared things like:

"I just really appreciate Kim's enthusiasm and the warm, welcoming environment she creates."

"The interactivity of this training was paramount."

"It felt like we gained more than we signed up for."

And one of my favorites:

"Kimberly's method of facilitation includes an excellent combination of teaching, utilizing applicable videos, and engaging the group in dialogue."

Supervisees have shared how meaningful it has been to walk alongside one another and how seen they have felt.

Students have told me, "It's so cool seeing someone who looks like me teaching. Thank you for helping me feel seen."

And clients... hearing people share that they chose life, that they stayed, that they kept going, that they are beginning to love themselves differently...that never gets old to me. It's why I do what I do.

But none of this happens alone.

I've been blessed with mentors who challenged me, colleagues who sharpened me, friends who listened to my wild ideas, community supporters who showed up, and people who believed in me long before there was evidence that any of this would work.

Thank you to every teacher, supervisor, friend, colleague, student, client, supervisee, and supporter who has trusted me, encouraged me, corrected me, and loved me through this journey.

Almost five years later, one thing has become clear:

People are the greatest part of this work.

And I wouldn't trade that for anything.

One of the most heartbreaking things I hear is when someone finally asks for help and leaves feeling worse.

Many LGBTQ+ individuals have shared experiences of:

• Being misunderstood
• Having their experiences minimized
• Being asked to educate their providers
• Feeling judged instead of supported

Good intentions matter.

Competence matters too.

As helping professionals, we have a responsibility to continuously learn, listen, and grow.

People should not have to wonder whether their therapist, doctor, or support system sees their full humanity.

Sometimes culture is treated as an obstacle to overcome.

I see it differently.

Culture can be a source of healing.

Culture can provide:

• Community
• Connection
• Spiritual practices
• Traditions
• Family wisdom
• Shared identity
• Strength during difficult times

As helping professionals, one of the most important questions we can ask is:

"What strengths already exist within this person's culture, family, or community?"

Healing doesn't always come from outside expertise.

Sometimes healing comes from reconnecting with what has sustained people for generations.

Reflection:
What cultural value or tradition has positively impacted your life?

30 Days to 5 Years | Day 21

For years, I kept hearing versions of the same story.

"I tried therapy once and never went back."

"I couldn't find someone who understood me."

"I gave up looking."

And honestly?

I understood.

Because finding culturally affirming care shouldn't feel like finding a needle in a haystack.

What struck me most wasn't just that people were struggling to find providers.

It was what happened next.

People stopped looking.

They dropped out.

They lost trust.

They decided help wasn't for them.

That's a problem.

And while directories are helpful, I've always believed they only solve part of the issue.

A directory can tell me who's available.

It can't tell me whether an organization is committed to growth.

It can't tell me what training has happened behind the scenes.

It can't tell me whether people are actively working to create affirming experiences.

That question stayed with me.

And eventually, it became The Healthcare GreenBook™.

More on that very soon...

30 Days to 5 Years | Day 20

What people see:

The keynote.

The training.

The conference presentation.

The polished slides.

What people don't see:

Me changing slide 47 for the eighth time at 11:30 PM or later.

Talking to myself while practicing.

Wondering if the audience will connect with the material.

Checking the technology 5 times.

Forgetting where I saved the final version.

Then finding it.

Me praying about my nerves.

The pep talk that I received right before it was "showtime."

The reality is that every training represents dozens of hours of work.

And honestly?

I love every minute of it.

Because every presentation is an opportunity to start a conversation that might change how someone shows up for the people they serve.

That's what keeps me coming back.
