Not because one body worked better than the other.
But because when labor hit a roadblock, the response was different.
Maybe one woman was encouraged to rest.
Maybe she ate a meal.
Maybe she drank water.
Maybe she changed positions, got in the tub, went for a walk, or received hands-on support from her birth team.
Sometimes what looks like a labor that has "stalled" is actually a woman who needs nourishment, movement, reassurance, privacy, rest, or simply a different approach.
This does not mean anti-intervention. Interventions have an important place in birth.
But with the way birth outcomes currently look in this country, it is time to start recognizing that before moving to medical intervention, there are often many ways to support the normal physiology of labor.
