If someone is concerned, if a child is frustrated, if a screener indicates a possible difference or delay- we should not be waiting to get an assessment from a specialist.

We refer. And then if the specialist does an evaluation and recommends waiting, then we can wait. But even then, follow ups are a good idea!

And honestly (kinda) true for me- like I knew what Autism signs are, but it took until my mom said, “Kam can’t be Autistic because he’s just like you were at that age” and I was like hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I think this should be a nuanced discussion. Compliance just for compliance’s sake is not a goal. Safety, boundaries, healthcare, and (some 🤣) rules do require compliance.

Autism is a pattern of differences and not just one or two things. Here is a mix of some stereotypical and non-stereotypical traits. Having one or two of these does not make one autistic, but having patterns of these (plus others) would indicate possible Autism.

“Oh we’re Autistic too!”
Stranger on airplane - “I know” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

To be clear, this was not offensive because there’s nothing wrong with being Autistic. And honestly, it was pretty validating coming from a place where people just didn’t see it before and (potentially) inserted negative labels instead.

When this happened, Kam was getting pretty dysregulated having to sit on a plane with no air conditioning for quite a bit of time- with the kid sitting behind him kicking his seat. We knew the family behind us had been up since early in the morning dealing with delayed flights and I was pretty certain the child behind him had a disability. So I told Kam he could move to my seat or try to tolerate the kid moving around. He didn’t like either of those choices, so was bringing it up frequently. It was really nice to have someone understand! And he gave Kam a trading card and let him infodump about his new watch 🤣

Autism is a pattern of differences and it’s impossible to put a complete neuronormative (neurotypical) or Autistic profile into a social media post. Because people are more than a list of traits and people are just complex.

I wanted to highlight how autistic and non-autistic people can have similar profiles and what may make me think autism could be a possibility in a high masking girl.

Also want to add that Nellie could do most of these things and still be autistic. But in order for her to be Autistic, she would have to have many additional differences than those listed here.
