Complex trauma is just that--complex.
It doesn't occur from a single incident like being the victim of a violent crime, or being in a terrible car accident or a natural disaster.
Complex trauma develops over time, layer by layer, from repeatedly experiencing situations that overwhelm the nervous system's ability to process. It's the difference between living THROUGH a natural disaster and living IN a war zone.
The incidents that create it may be viewed as "unfortunate" or "tough" situations rather than actual trauma.
Clients often describe a childhood of chaos, instability, and violence as "just the way it was."
Because the abuse or neglect was so insidious, the nervous system started running in high gear all the time, constantly preparing for whatever was coming next.
The hard part for those who are just learning about this trauma they experienced is that, because the nervous system found a way to protect them, they didn't realize they were experiencing trauma as much as they were.
Even when its labeled as trauma, it is hard to see how they survived it. They don't see it as survival sometimes. "I just did what I had to do" is a common theme.
But there is a survival story there.
They may not be aware of it until we begin to explore how they managed the constant stress.
In that there is a story of how they coped and learned to escape the chaos or violence, sometimes without ever leaving the house.
Survivors of Complex Trauma are tough.
They are resilient.
And they are tired.
Because complex trauma starts early in life, the first layer sometimes being prenatal, its treatment looks different than the treatment for single incident traumas.
Treatment needs to be more comprehensive.
It is a slower process, sometimes much slower than the client wants it to be.
It requires building trust, not just a working alliance.
Complex trauma is a specialized area of study and practice. Trauma informed care doesn't always include experience or training in trauma of the Complex type.
That's why it's important to find a provider who has experience and training specifically aimed at treating Complex Trauma.
