Antibiotic overuse is contributing to the creation of mutant antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Antibiotics are commonly used to “treat” ear infections. It’s not uncommon to finish one round and then shortly after start another round because the ear infection “came back.”

There are multiple issues with this scenario.
1) the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that for acute otitis media (ear infections) a wait and see approach is best.
2) viral infections do not respond to antibiotics like bacterial infections making them a poor choice. Ear infections are commonly viral. This is why proper diagnosis is key if you’re going to utilize pharmaceuticals.
3) the use of antibiotics will wipe out beneficial bacteria in the gut microbiome. Repeated uses of antibiotics only further ensures these bacteria are wiped out which leads to a decrease in immune strength. This creates a vicious cycle of creating an environment in which harmful viruses/bacteria can thrive and is how we can go from acute otitis media to chronic.

So what do I recommend?

Proper drainage and improved immune function are the two best things you can do to prevent ear infections.

Since ear 👂 infections thrive in stagnant fluid within the Eustachian tube, mobilization of fluid with chiropractic care not only helps improve the body’s ability to naturally recover from insults to the body but also to decrease the likelihood of future infection by creating an environment that is inhospitable to invading pathogens.

Immune function is improved with many things like: nutrient rich diet, adequate sleep, reduced stressed, exercise, hydration etc.
In babies, the best immune booster has been shown to be breast milk since it is packed with antibodies.
For both babies and adults, Chiropractic adjustments help improve immune function by improving the function of the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord and all the nerves that exit) which ultimately controls everything in the body as it is the master system of the body.
