Service is for all of us

You will remember that Jesus said, “I am among you as one who serves” (Luke 22:27). And he also said, “Whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant” (Mark 10:44). By the way, it is dreadful to see this recommended as only another technique for succeeding in leadership. Jesus wasn’t giving techniques for successful leadership. He was telling us who the great person is. He or she is the one who is servant of all. Being a servant shifts one’s relationship to everyone. What do you think it would do to sexual temptation if you thought of yourself as a servant? What do you think it would do to covetousness? What do you think it would do to the feeling of resentment because you didn’t get what you thought you deserved? I’ll tell you. It will lift the burden.

What does it mean to truly see?

What does it mean to truly see?

John 9 tells the wonderful story of Jesus giving a man his sight. It wasn’t restored because the man had been blind from birth. He was given sight for the first time. That’s cause for celebration! Yet that is not what happened. And it becomes the backdrop to a larger conversation about seeing. T...

God is largely hidden.

But his hiddenness does not make union with him impossible. Hidden does not mean absent. The sense that God is absent, writes Martin Laird, a professor of historical theology, "is the great illusion that we are caught up in; it is the human condition." This misconception leads to all manner of anxiety: God is not with me; God doesn't seem to care about my situation; I must have somehow offended God, and now he won't speak to me.

But God does not hide from us or tease us as if playing a game of cosmic "peekaboo." If God were not largely hidden, he would overwhelm us. He would be too much to take in. We would feel we had no choice in the matter of dealing with him, of loving him or not, of trusting him. No one would be able to avert their eyes or close their ears. Fully revealed, God would be more blinding than the sun and louder than a space shuttle launch.

Learn to see the hidden God at work in the small things, the routines of your daily life. Get out of your thinking head and into heart communion with God. Using only our minds in spirituality makes God seem remote, distant, and outside of us. Communing with God through our hearts brings him and his attributes close.

We can be at peace in the middle of human difficulty knowing that God, while perhaps not seen, is there. He is present in the situation, in others, in me.

When we look at the original meaning of the word “discipline,” it’s about teaching, mentoring, and skill-building. Instead of focusing on consequences, or punishment, we want to focus on our end goal. The long-term goal of discipline is for our children to become self-disciplined people. That requires a lot of skill-building and teaching over time. From this perspective, we know we’re being effective “disciplinarians” (teachers) when we’re finding ourselves disciplining less and less over time because

📍our children are building the skills and capacity to regulate their behavior and emotions,
📍they’re making better choices,
📍and they’re handling themselves better over time.

When we think of each (or at least most) discipline moments as moments to teach and build skills so that our children have the possibility of doing better the next time, that is discipline.
