HB 5374 has been signed into law, making Connecticut the next state to support insurance coverage for scalp cooling from January 2027.

Expanding access to scalp cooling continues across the U.S, helping ensure more patients can access this important form of support during treatment. We want to say thank you to the advocates who helped make this happen.

We recommend patients use natural oils such as olive, coconut, or castor oil if they feel their hair getting dry. Avoid the scalp to minimize build up on pores. Also, avoid shampoos with sulfates, parabens and other harsh chemicals.

We have many patients who use diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV) to help with itching and flaking. They have recommended starting with 1 Tablespoon of ACV to 1 cup of water, and pour over your scalp and let sit for about 10 minutes. They work their way up to 1/4 cup ACV to 1 cup water. Due to the acidity of ACV, limit this to only a few times a week and not on back-to-back days.

We haven't conducted a study on the effectiveness of ACV, but patients share that doing this 2-3 times a week helps.

Swimming is perfectly fine, but we advise against getting your hair wet. It is recommended to avoid harsh chemicals that can lead to dry hair, breakage, progressive hair thinning and hair loss. It is not known whether chlorine or salt water will damage your hair during scalp cooling.

Using a swim cap is not recommended because of the additional strain it puts on the hair follicles.

If you do go swimming, we advise washing your hair and proceed with the recommended hair care.

After your first chemo treatment with your DigniCap, coolant remaining in the cooling wrap is normal. Between treatments, store your DigniCap and cooling wrap in a cool, dry place. Don't wash your wrap between treatments.
