My last highlight from the annual meeting was getting to present some of the trauma research we have been working on at Children's Health where the Scottish Rite surgeons take call. We hope we convinced surgeons in the audience to only treat one bone with intramedullary fixation when faced with a child who has a both bone forearm fracture. Stay tuned for the manuscript! Another highlight of the annual meeting was getting to spend time with two men who have inspired me so much, Drs. Tony Herring and Alvin Crawford. Both have left their stamp on care of children in ways that are hard to fully quantify. And even though neither of them formally trained me, I feel that the advice I've gleaned from them over the years has culminated into a mini-fellowship in work-life balance and clinical excellence.

One of the highlights of the annual meeting was my graduation from the POSNA Leadership Program. Over the last 12 months, I had the privilege of going through a mini-Harvard Business School leadership course with 8 outstanding peds orthopods from across the country. Big thanks to our course directors, Ginny Casey, Steve Frick, and Peter Waters for dedicating so much of their time to make us better leaders and set POSNA up for success in the future!

Last year, our team at Scottish Rite for Children performed the first BoneMRI (aka synthetic CT) spine surgery on a child in the U.S. Since then we have continued to innovate in this area. While no tool is perfect for all of the children we treat, I truly do believe that we are moving closer to a near radiation free surgical experience for these patients. I was honored to partner with OrthoPediatrics to speak with pediatric spine surgeons across country on Scottish Rite's experience implementing this new technology at our hospital.

Ximena has an amazing story and an amazing gift. She began noticing that she was having difficulty walking and started to develop .
As her parents witnessed her ability to walk slowly diminish, they knew they needed to get Ximena evaluated at Scottish Rite for Children. Our excellent nurses realized this was not a routine scoliosis appointment and knew she needed a neurosurgeon immediately. Fortunately our neurosurgery colleagues at Children's Medical Center had her in the MRI scanner and to the operating room 48 hours after she arrived. At that time, they found a spinal cord tumor and were able to safely remove it. Just 2 months later she is back to running and enjoying life as a teenager. She painted this picture that includes a spine for me and a brain for neurosurgery to thank her care team for giving her hope again.
Ximena, thank you for sharing your gift with not just us, but the world!.

We are so proud of the UTSW students who matched into orthopaedic residency programs last month. In order to prepare them for their first year, our current ortho interns sat the students down to drop helpful knowledge on how to be the best intern possible.

This past week at the AAOS annual meeting was amazing! I was able to reconnect with my old chief residents from Johns Hopkins, Drs. Eric Tan and David Macias. I was also able to present at the RJOS meeting on the OREF funded study on resident attrition they awarded our team at Scottish Rite/UT-Southwestern. I was fortunate to take part in a nice pediatric spine debate chaired by Dr. Ying Li. I was also able to catch up with our prior research fellow Dr. Carlos Monroig who is currently an orthopaedic resident at LSU-New Orleans and killing it! And finally I was honored to present the Gladden Society's Health Equity and Diversity Award to my friend and colleague, Dr. Selina P**n for all of the research she has done to help the field of orthopaedic surgery look more like the patients we are trying to take care of.

The Council of Orthopaedic Residency Directors (CORD) meeting brings together orthopaedic educators from across the country. Last week I had a blast representing UT-Southwestern's orthopaedic program along with our amazing education team. It was also great running into so many colleagues from Johns Hopkins.

Scottish Rite takes care of so many children that wouldn't otherwise get orthopaedic care, but we aren't the only organization that does this. This is from Barbados and was sponsored by the World Pediatric Project Caribbean to get his surgery at Scottish Rite given his underlying diagnosis. One month later he is ready to get back to the island and soak in the sun! World Pediatrics

Thank to the Carolinas Medical Center and Wake Forest Orthopaedic Surgery departments for inviting me to give a grand rounds talk on utilizing synthetic CTs for spinal navigation. In addition to the "talk", I had a blast hanging out with their amazing peds ortho group including Brian Scannell, Brian Brighton, Mike Paloski, Ginnie Casey, Steve Frick, and Peter Waters. These programs are stacked with so much talent and a high number of past POSNA presidents 😀!
