June is PTSD Awareness Month — a time to recognize the invisible wounds carried by so many, including Veterans, first responders, healthcare professionals, and trauma survivors across our communities.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is not a sign of weakness. It is a human response to overwhelming experiences, and awareness matters because understanding can lead to support, treatment, and hope.

At Valor Healthcare, we believe mental healthcare is healthcare. Creating spaces where people feel safe asking for help, sharing their experiences, and accessing compassionate care can change — and save — lives.

This month, we honor the resilience of those living with PTSD and encourage continued conversations around mental health awareness, support, and healing.

During National Nurses Month, we’re proud to recognize the nurses whose experience, compassion, and dedication have made a lasting impact on the Veterans we serve.

Today, we’re highlighting Mary “Katrina” Scanlon-Ludwigsen, LPN, one of the most tenured team members at our Oswego CBOC.

Mary began her nursing career after graduating from Oswego County BOCES in 1986 and has spent decades caring for patients across a variety of healthcare settings. She joined the VA outpatient clinic in Oswego in 2003 and has remained a steady, trusted presence through multiple transitions — including continuing her service when Valor Healthcare assumed clinic operations in 2022.

Currently serving as the clinic’s Telehealth LPN, Mary is known for her versatility, teamwork, and willingness to step in wherever needed to support Veterans and colleagues alike.

Outside of work, Mary enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, baking, and competing in Texas Hold ’Em tournaments across the country.

This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country. While the holiday weekend may bring gatherings, travel, and the unofficial start of summer, we remember the true meaning behind the day: sacrifice, courage, and the cost of freedom.

For generations, Americans wore red poppies on Memorial Day as a symbol of remembrance for fallen service members. The tradition began after World War I, and the poppy remains one of the most recognized symbols honoring those who never made it home.

At Valor Healthcare, honoring Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice is not just part of our mission — it’s part of who we are.

This Memorial Day, we remember. We honor. We never forget.

This National Nurses Month, we’re honoring the extraordinary legacy of nurses who have changed lives, strengthened communities, and shaped history through compassion and service.

One of our colleagues recently shared the incredible story of their grandmother, Lt. Louisa Moir (1922–2001), a World War II nurse whose impact reached far beyond the bedside. During the war, Lt. Moir served both overseas and aboard military hospital trains in the United States, where specially equipped railcars transported wounded service members across the country for medical treatment closer to home. Photographs from her wartime service were later featured in the Smithsonian.

After World War II ended, Lt. Moir remained in Europe to care for displaced Holocaust survivors before eventually returning to the United States where she earned her master’s degree in public health from Boston College. She later became Director of the Malden Hospital School of Nursing, where she helped educate and mentor future generations of nurses. She retired in the 1980s after more than forty years of service in nursing, education, and public health.

Nursing is more than a profession. It is a legacy of resilience, humanity, and healing passed from one generation to the next. This month, we proudly celebrate nurses like Lt. Louisa Moir and the countless nurses today who continue changing the world every single day.

During National Nurses Month, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible nurses who make up the largest part of our workforce and play such a vital role in the care we provide every day.

Today, we’re highlighting Rebecca Bevacqua, RN, of our Oswego CBOC PACT 1 team.

For the past 2.5 years, Rebecca has brought compassion, excellence, and dedication to the Veterans she serves. Since earning her BSN from SUNY Canton in 2020, she has built experience across a variety of healthcare settings while continuing to lead with empathy and patient-centered care.

Outside the clinic, Rebecca is a wife, mother of two, proud dog mom to Bulldogs Lola and Tony, and an avid gardener who stays busy supporting her daughter’s activities.

Her favorite quote:
“Plan for the future in the NOW.”

We’re grateful for the hard work, kindness, and commitment Rebecca brings to our Oswego CBOC each day. Thank you for all you do for our Veterans and your team.
