I finally took my own advice.
For years, I’ve been recommending Pilates for core strength, mobility and preventative spine care. My wife goes religiously so I finally joined her for a class. It was an incredible low-impact, full-body workout, and I’m definitely going back!
For anyone not yet “in the know,” here’s the skinny on Pilates:
🔹 The History: Developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates as “Contrology,” it focuses on controlled movement, breath and core stability to restore physical balance.
🔹 The Reformer: During WWI, Mr. Pilates attached springs and straps to hospital beds to help bedridden soldiers rehabilitate, creating the prototype for today’s Reformer. Spring-based resistance strengthens deep stabilizing muscles around the spine without high-impact joint stress.
🔹 The Evidence: Research backs it up. Systematic reviews show Pilates significantly reduces pain and disability for chronic low back pain, with the best results coming from consistency (aiming for ~20+ total hours over 8–12 weeks).
Huge shoutout to our instructor, Ashley, and the team at SESSION Pilates for a fantastic class. I can officially speak from experience now when I rave about it! 👏 💪
