Mateo Diaz Martinez had a deep love for sports and an adventurous spirit. He was passionate about motorcycles, biking, soccer and more recently pickleball, says his mother, Valentina Martinez. “Mateo was a wonderful son, brother and friend—a boy who radiated light wherever he went. He was always ready to help others, offering a big smile no matter the situation,” she says.
His mother added, “He was a boy who always wanted to help others, always smiling no matter the situation. It was his desire to be an organ and eye donor, and it’s especially important that his generosity is remembered.”
“Donation is the ultimate act of generosity, and like Mateo, we are committed to it. As a family, we’ll continue raising awareness to inspire even more people to give this life-saving gift.”

Maria Gomez, known as Mary to her family and friends, was a talented seamstress, babysitter and even built kitchen countertops, according to her daughter, Joanne Gomez. "She worked in healthcare for over 20 years, and at the time of her passing, she was employed at an assisted living facility. My mom was a dedicated worker—loyal, positive and confident."

Nearly a year ago, 64-year-old Mary passed away after sustaining injuries in an auto accident. She left a lasting legacy through her tissue donation, helping to improve and save the lives of countless patients. Mary's cornea donation restored sight to an 83-year-old woman in Florida and a 62-year-old man in North Carolina.

“Being a donor was something she always wanted, and it was noted on her driver’s license,” says Gomez. “Our family chose to honor her wish by donating her corneas and tissues. We take pride and comfort in knowing that part of her is still helping others, which is what she loved to do. We feel proud and honored by that decision.”

Hispanic Heritage Month
is a time to recognize and celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Observed from September 15 to October 15,
the month begins on the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with Mexico and Chile celebrating shortly after.
Since its establishment, Hispanic Heritage Month has grown into a vibrant celebration of identity, resilience, and community. It is a space to honor heritage while uplifting the voices, values, and lived experiences of Hispanic/Latino individuals across the United States
