State of reminiscence - I recall my 80 year old professor’s gentle & charming presence. His humble teaching philosophy and inquisitive mind I admired - He taught his students with deep thought, intention, grace, and curiosity, unfailing to share the strengths and beauties he identified with his students. Though an expert, he never took the position of knowing more or knowing all; He was genuinely so curious to understand our reality and worldview.
I have been inquired about efficient & pertinent solution(s) to the ongoing issue of systemic racism and racial injustice. If we could all take the stance of my professor; Curious and not reluctant to display vulnerability that we may not and do not know everything. Research and informing yourself is significant, but no textbook or (academic/resourceful) article can demonstrate the realities and experiences of people.
Asking and engaging in conversations that provoke discomfort expands your anxiety window and generates growth. Sustainable and long-lasting growth and change, which we refer to as Second Order Change. To practice and adopt the position of curiosity permeates safety & security that communicates that every person is worthy. Despite our unique & beautiful “differences,” we are all important and seen. Hope this is helpful and meaningful in some way!
Thank you, Dr. Jennings. You saw the strengths I carried, qualities I was unable to see myself. Your curiosity and kindness influenced my quest to self love, self worth, and self compassion. Here today, I find myself, too, taking the position of curiosity and highlighting the beauties and strengths in my clients and others. For you, I am forever grateful.
