Last week, the six medical students who participated in the Community Health Summer Fellowship Program (CHFP) presented their research projects, highlighting a range of community health issues affecting underserved populations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The annual CHFP connects UT Southwestern medical students with community organizations, providing hands-on research experience while addressing health challenges faced by underserved communities.

We are excited that we get to spend another year with former chief resident Dr. Sandra Chang as she embarks on her journey as Community Medicine Fellow!

Here are a few facts about Dr. Chang:

About Me: I was born and raised in Rochester, NY. I attended Brown University for undergrad, Texas Tech University Health sciences Center for med school, and UT Southwestern for residency.

Professional Interests: Uninsured/underinsured populations, refugee health, gender affirming care.

Hobbies: I love growing plants, trying new foods, and traveling.

Interesting Fact: I have a bartending license.

Dr. Sarah Woods Awarded NIH R01 Grant to Advance Hypertension Self-Management Among African American Patients

Sarah Woods, PhD, LMFT-Supervisor, Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine and Vice Chair of Research, has been awarded a five-year R01 research grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to evaluate the effectiveness of an innovative multilevel, family-based hypertension self-management intervention designed specifically to address the needs of African American patients receiving care in primary care settings. The research will be supported by the National Institute On Minority Health And Health Disparities of the National Institutes of Health under Award Number R01MD021505.

Through this award, Dr. Woods and her team will investigate strategies to improve hypertension self-management and improve health outcomes among African American adults, a population disproportionately affected by high blood pressure and its complications.

This award represents an important opportunity to develop and test approaches that recognize the critical role families and support systems play in chronic disease management. By engaging patients and their families, the investigators hope to identify effective strategies that improve blood pressure control and promote long-term health outcomes.

Dr. Woods will lead a multidisciplinary team of collaborators that includes Shawna Nesbitt, MD, MS, Professor of Internal Medicine and Vice President and Chief Institutional Opportunity Officer; Victoria Udezi, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine and Associate Vice Chair of Community Health; and Patricia Roberson, PhD, Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
