From medical student to faculty member, Samantha Lopez Kroger, M.D., has come full circle at UT Southwestern.

A Rockwall, Texas native, Dr. Lopez Kroger completed both medical school and her dermatology residency here before joining our faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor. Her interests span general, inpatient, and procedural dermatology, giving her a well-rounded approach to patient care.

UTSW has also been the backdrop for her personal life where she met her husband here in medical school, and the two now have two daughters. And before her white coat, she wore a different uniform: Dr. Lopez Kroger was also a yoga teacher during medical school.

We’re glad to officially welcome her to the team!

Understanding bias is essential to delivering equitable patient care.

We’re looking forward to Grand Rounds tomorrow as Prapti Mody, Ph.D., Director of Graduate Education Initiatives at UT Southwestern, presents “More than Skin Deep: The Science of Implicit Bias.”

Dr. Mody brings a unique perspective to this topic, blending her background in neuroscience research with her current work leading implicit bias trainings across UT Southwestern. Her career path, from studying neuroinflammation to shaping graduate education and equity initiatives, informs a talk that connects the science of bias to real-world clinical practice.

This session offers valuable insight for physicians, researchers, and trainees committed to recognizing and addressing bias in medicine.

Some great news from our research team!

Brooke Bartley, M.D. took home Best Oral Abstract Presentation at the American Society of Preventive Cardiology meeting for her work on the STRATIFY-PsD study.

In short, patients with psoriasis have a higher risk of heart disease, and many already have chest CT scans in their records that show early warning signs, like coronary artery calcification, that often go unnoticed. Dr. Bartley’s research is helping build a system to flag those findings so care teams can catch them sooner.

Great research, delivered with a great presentation. We love seeing our trainees push the field forward. 👏

Throwback to a couple of weeks back, our department came together for a research lecture packed with engaged learners… standing room only!

Dr. Xiaoquan Wang, from Dr. Choi’s lab, presented “Evolution-Driven Responses to Skin Pathogens,” exploring how certain fungi can “hide” from the immune system, a process that plays a role in how skin and other infections take hold in the body. Understanding these hidden signals could help researchers develop better ways to detect and treat fungal infections in the future.

Thank you, Dr. Wang, for sharing such thought-provoking research, and to everyone who joined us. Moments like these are why we love being part of this academic community.

New article in The Lancet takes a close look at psoriasis, a condition affecting more than 60 million people worldwide.

This Seminar breaks down what’s really happening in the body with psoriasis, from genetics to inflammation, and why it’s linked to other health issues like heart disease and depression. It also covers how far treatment has come, giving patients more options than ever for clearer skin and a better quality of life.

Great example of experts coming together to push dermatology forward, thanks to authors Lihi Eder MD, Lourdes Perez-Chada MD, Wilson Liao MD, and Joseph F Merola MD.

Hey! We know her! 😜

This is Dr. Beth Childs, who’s continuing her dermatology training right here at UTSW, where she also earned her MD! Before medicine, Beth studied Business Honors and Finance at UT Austin and worked in healthcare banking and equity research, a path that eventually led her to the lab and clinic.

During medical school, she spent a dedicated research year in our Department of Dermatology as a Dean’s Research Scholar, studying inflammatory skin disease and cutaneous lymphoma. Her interests include medical dermatology, immunodermatology, T-cell biology, clinical research, and medical education.

Away from the hospital, Beth loves Pilates, chasing her step goals, traveling, and trying new restaurants (pasta night and a good glass of wine are non-negotiable). She cheers on both the Longhorns and the Aggies, and shares this medical journey with her twin younger brothers, both in med school in San Antonio.

So glad you’re staying, Beth.

Please welcome our 2026–2027 Mohs Micrographic Surgery Fellows: Alec Gramann, M.D., Ph.D., and Darren Kempton, M.D., DPT.

Both fellows join UT Southwestern Dermatology to complete advanced, specialized training in Mohs surgery, a precise technique used to treat skin cancer while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

We’re glad to have them as part of our team this year and look forward to the work ahead.
