Building more than a tent out here: teamwork, problem-solving, confidence, and motor skills.

Giving kids space to figure things out together — with the support (and sometimes the natural obstacles) of Mother Nature herself.

Potion making in outdoor OT was a big hit!

Creativity, following instructions, opening containers, hand strengthening, pouring, and scooping are great skills needed for simple meal prep, improving independence with opening their own snacks/ toothpaste, and school skills like cutting/ handwriting!

Bonus win: activating our sensory systems through touch, smell, and vision to keep us mindful and present. We need this type of play to teach mindfulness and work towards regulating our emotions.

The peer model is so important!

Children are often much more motivated to copy their peers so we use the camaraderie to our advantage to gain some new skills here!

Bear crawls are an excellent way to get some heavy work (proprioception) for grounding, calming, regulating input.

They are also great for hand and shoulder strengthening, which kids need for handwriting, cutting, climbing, and household chores.

Bear crawls also help integrate the STNR (symmetrical tonic neck reflex). This reflex should be integrated by 6-9 months, but we see it in many kiddos who struggle with poor posture, clumsiness, reading, writing, copying from the board, eye tracking and focusing.

Ask us more about the STNR and other reflexes!

Occupational therapy is more than just fine motor skills.

One of the reasons we started a nature based OT group is to address real-time social skills and emotional regulation skills.

Working in a group setting allows us to address these skills with peers instead of a fabricated experience with a therapist in a clinic or on a worksheet of hypotheticals.

Most of the time these kids can answer hypotheticals just fine, but in the moment there’s so much more that goes into a response.

That’s why it matters they get support on these factors in real time, when the responses actually matter and the decisions are being made.

We can rewire our brains to react appropriately, adapt, compromise, and communicate effectively like this!

The reason we start all of our sessions having the kids create their own obstacle courses ⬇️⬇️

1. Creating, planning, adjusting, and sequencing the steps of the obstacle course are called “executive functioning skills” and they are necessary for managing projects at school or at home, managing emotions, and navigating social interactions. If you want your child to make decisions, be flexible, and problem solve, I recommend this activity!

2. We work on SO many motor skills in one circuit. Crawling, pushing, balancing, jumping, target throwing, reflex integration (more on that later)

3. Sensory!!! Heavy work for grounding and regulating, balance and head inversion to activate our vestibular systems, touch, visual, and auditory. When we work multiple sensory systems together (multi sensory integration), we improve learning, memory, and safety!

04/01/2026

Sliding inverted activates the vestibular system, which is fundamental for balance, spatial awareness, regulation, and oculomotor skills (think tracking moving objects like a ball, reading, or copying from the board).

Cutting and building racetracks around a child’s special interest supports fine motor skills, hand strength, hand-eye coordination, planning, and sustained attention. When we follow what lights them up, we get more engagement, more learning, and more growth.

Happy OT month!

🍋🫧 It might look like we’re just making lemonade and blowing bubbles…

But here’s what’s really happening:

Squeezing lemons, adjusting recipes, and trying again when it doesn’t taste quite right builds CONFIDENCE. Kids see that they can make something from start to finish and they’re proud! (One of these kiddos wants to start a lemonade stand now!)

And those giant bubble wands? They don’t work perfectly the first time (or the second, and maybe third😅). Bubbles pop. Kids get frustrated. And then… they try again.

That’s PERSEVERANCE.

In these moments, kids are learning:
✨ “I can do hard things”
✨ “It’s okay if it doesn’t work right away”
✨ “I can figure this out”
