We know what the recommendations are. The harder question is: have we built a system that actually makes them achievable?
Fewer than 1 in 3 U.S. babies are exclusively breastfed through the recommended first six months. Families face gaps in lactation care, inadequate leave and workplace support, fragmented education, and limited awareness of donor milk pathways.
The consequences extend far beyond individual feeding journeys. Globally, suboptimal breastfeeding contributes to substantial preventable illness and loss of life. Human milk access is not simply a parenting preferenceāit is a public-health issue.
And thatās exactly why weāre headed to Toronto for the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Annual International Meeting. āļøšØš¦
Iāll be sharing our work on how digital infrastructure can help bridge the gaps between healthcare visitsāproviding families with timely education, ongoing support, and clearer pathways to donor human milk when a parentās own milk isnāt enough.
We canāt simply keep telling families to breastfeed longer.
We have to build the infrastructure that makes doing so possible. š©µ
