Coping With Grief During the Holidays
The holiday season is often portrayed as a time of joy, connection, and celebration — but for many, it can also amplify feelings of grief and loss. Whether you’re grieving the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or even a version of life you hoped for, this time of year can bring complicated emotions to the surface.
Grief doesn’t follow a schedule, and holiday traditions or gatherings may intensify memories and feelings that are difficult to navigate. You may find yourself pulled between wanting to honor the season and wanting to withdraw. Both responses are valid.
Here are a few gentle reminders for moving through grief during the holidays:
• Give yourself permission to feel what you feel.
You don’t have to force cheerfulness or hide your emotions. Grief is a natural, human response to loss.
• Adjust traditions in ways that feel right for you.
You may choose to maintain meaningful rituals, modify them, or create entirely new ones. There is no “correct” way to grieve.
• Set boundaries with events and expectations.
It’s okay to decline invitations, leave early, or let others know what you need. Protecting your emotional energy is an act of care.
• Seek connection — in whatever form feels gentle.
Whether it’s talking with a trusted friend, joining a support group, or spending quiet time with someone who understands, connection can help soften feelings of isolation.
• Reach out for professional support.
If you’re struggling with grief this holiday season, know that you’re not alone. Your feelings matter, your experience is valid, and healing happens at your own pace. Support is available when you’re ready.
