The 2026 Trustees Report for Social Security & Medicare was released today. The Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) Trust Fund will be able to pay 100 percent of total scheduled benefits until the fourth quarter of 2032, one quarter earlier than projected last year. At that time, the fund’s reserves will become depleted and continuing program income will be sufficient to pay 78 percent of total scheduled benefits. This is an important read, see the link below for a summary of the report.

Once again, the two public trustees are vacant, they have been vacant since 2008. But in 1983, Congress added a requirement that the administration also nominate two public trustees – from different parties – to be confirmed by the Senate. They serve as independent voices to ensure the annual reports don't have an overt, or a covert, political agenda.
