I’ve always been very passionate about writing and actually began writing a book this year about everything I’ve learned as I’ve navigated living with chronic illness. It’s a messy process, but something I have always felt like documenting for others to benefit from. Without others learning from my mistakes, then what was it all for? I’m truly an open book with clients, but there’s never enough time to share every detail with the people in my life.

Substack is a really cool way for me to be able to share more details with the world. I plan to write weekly posts about my journey towards healing, in somewhat of a chronological way. If this is something you would enjoy, please follow along and subscribe via the link in my bio.

I’m still on a healing journey and constantly seeking new tools, resources, and education. Stay tuned as my posts begin to expand with more perks for those of you on this same path. To my paid subscribers, you’ll receive weekly audio messages with lessons I’ve learned from week to week, or just thoughts I wish to share. I find it’s a fun way to stay connected and for you to get a better glimpse at my day to day life, as a functional nutritionist on an active path towards freedom and the truth over all things.

This week’s post covers life before developing chronic illness and all the warning signs to look out for in early years. I look forward to sharing more with yall soon. And make sure to SUBSCRIBE!

Navigating grief this week is something that weighs heavily on my physical body by showing up as a tight chest, tired eyes, and a heavy heart. My grandmother, Mo, passed this week at 90 years old. No time with Mo ever would have been enough because she added so much beauty, music, love, humor, and joy to every room. She was a classically trained pianist and our family spent every holiday gathered around a piano singing carols, musicals, and we even had 3 part harmonies during happy birthday. We grew up on Mo’s Louisiana Gumbo, her famous stuffing at Thanksgiving, and made sure to always bring her a bag of Frito’s. All of our childhood friends took piano lessons from her and she even lived with us for a short time while we were growing up. I don’t have a lot of childhood memories that Mo wasn’t a part of.

As I got older, I began learning about who Mo was at her core. She was a fierce, strong, loyal, and independent woman who always spoke her mind. When I was younger, this used to be intimidating because nothing got past Mo. She made sure every woman in our family knew that they could do anything they put their minds to. She was a diehard feminist who was way ahead of her time. She had the sharpest mind, quickest wit, and biggest personality.

I’ve been thinking about her legacy the past few days and what I plan to carry on for her. Mo was the kind of friend you could ALWAYS rely on, no matter what you were facing. She knew how to pick you up when you were down and used music to transform any negative space into a positive one. The world became brighter when she was in the room and I hope to do the same in my life.

Mo used to call me Goddess Girl and I never quite understood why. I never even thought to ask. I plan to live up to this name by standing in my power, shining my light, and living unapologetically as my most genuine self. I looked up characteristics of a goddess today and read that they are forces of nature, a woman with wisdom, love, beauty, and power. Goddesses nurture life, birth new ideas, and shape one’s own reality. I think Mo was always trying to tell me something. Mo will always be with me and I will think of her any time I hear the piano.

Strength training is one of the best things we can do for our hormones, longevity, and metabolism. Since developing MCAS from mold toxicity and chronic EBV, getting back in the gym has been an ongoing struggle. Exercise is perceived stress to the nervous system, and pushing a little too far can mean a histamine flare. It’s taken me a decade to get here, but I’ve finally found some progress by emptying my mental stress cup and staying in-tune with my breath.

It finally hit 100 degrees in TX which means it’s time for ice cream! There are a lot of alternative ice creams that exist, but these brands care about quality. Cashew, coconut, and oat milk bases with mostly unrefined sugars. If i’m going out for a sweet treat, these are my faves to cool off on a hot summer evening.

🍦Botolino Gelato
🍦Melt Ice Cream
🍦Swirled Peace
🍦Van Leeuwen’s
🍦Pressed Juicery
🍦Cosmic Bliss

Even gluten and dairy free folks deserve a treat! Dallas has some amazing bakeries around town offering a variety of incredible baked goods. Cinnamon rolls, macaron ice cream sandwiches, protein cookies, and cupcakes. These are my favorite bakeries in the Dallas/Ft Worth area.

✨ Pinch of Salt
✨ Unrefined Bakery
✨ Ruby Baking Co
✨ Sweet Gilly’s
✨ Reverie Bakeshop
✨ Joy Macarons
✨ Sweet Addison’s
✨ Haute Sweets

What’s your favorite gluten/dairy free treat in Dallas?

There’s nothing like desserts that are healing and nourishing for the body! Sweet Addison’s is my favorite trade and upgrade healthy dessert made without gluten, dairy, and refined sugars. I swear if you put this cookie next to a regular one, you would pick this one every time. Plus, 17 grams of protein helps keep this blood sugar friendly too. You have to try for yourself! You can buy these online or at the Saint Thomas Farmers Market in Dallas.

Digestive bitters are an amazing way to support digestion naturally. The bitter herbs stimulate bile flow and stomach acid which can help reduce bloating, acid reflux, and constipation. In fact, I literally had 2 bowel movements today because of it!!
bitters is a new small business owned by a holistic dietician who made these without alcohol!! In my opinion, these are the most palatable bitters I’ve ever tried! I’m so excited to share these with my clients!

I had to add my two cents to the viral Trader Joes laxative fiber gummy trend going on right now! Yall realize that the mass exodus in your gut could actually be an inflammatory reaction?! We need about 35 grams of fiber a day and this whole bag contains about 70 grams. They’re also sweetened with erythritol which can feed bad bacteria in the gut causing loose stool and bloating. This isn’t a health trend!

If you want to add more fiber in your diet, try some of these high fiber foods:
Psyllium husk - 4 g per tablespoon
Chia seeds – 3 g per tablespoon
Basil seeds – 5.5 g per tablespoon
Lentils - 7.5 g per 1/2 cup
Avocado - 5 g per 1/2 cup
Apple (with skin) – 4.5g per medium fruit
Sweet potato - 6.5 g per 1 cup

I’ve been gluten and dairy free for almost a decade and I have found that Dallas has some of the best variety when it comes to accessibility around food. These are my favorite restaurants around town to get anti-inflammatory options! Most of these are also seed oil free, grass-fed, and some are even organic! Not all of these are celiac friendly, but most are accommodating and understanding to your requests!

✨HG Sply Co
✨Bella Green
✨Ascenion Coffee
✨Two Hands
✨James Provisions
✨Tribal All Day Cafe
✨Company Cafe
✨Asian Mint
✨Cibo Divino
✨Whiskey Cake
✨Honorable mentions: Flower Child, True Food Kitchen, Sweet Green, Original Chop Shop, Modern Market, Hat Creek, and Cava!

Which one is your fave? And are there any you’ve never tried? Fill me in if I missed your faves!
