When is dialysis necessary?
Dialysis is needed when the kidneys can no longer properly filter waste and fluid, most often in end-stage kidney disease (Stage 5) when function drops below about 10–15% (GFR < 15).
It helps remove toxins, balance electrolytes, and support overall body function when the kidneys can’t keep up.
Types of dialysis include:
* Hemodialysis: Done at a clinic using a machine to filter your blood
* Peritoneal dialysis: Done at home using the lining of your abdomen to clean the blood
Dialysis may be temporary in some cases, but for chronic kidney disease, it is often a long-term treatment.
