Bravo to Delta Air Lines!!!

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BLgPXhY1j/

I just got off the phone with Delta Air Lines. I explained that Penny—our 20-year-old daughter with Down syndrome—will be flying on her own for the first time this summer. We talked through the options. Should we request a wheelchair so she has someone take her all the way onto the plane? Or should she simply request someone to walk her to the gate, after which she would board on her own? I’m going to talk those options through with Penny (and if you have suggestions for the best way to scaffold this next step for her, please send those our way). Meanwhile, I have to tell you what the Delta agent said as we were hanging up:

ā€œThis is so exciting. To give [people with Down syndrome] the freedom they so desperately need. We are so proud of her. Bravo. We will do everything we can to help her take this next step.ā€

Bravo, indeed. To Penny. To Delta. To everyone who wants to play a little part in taking the next step towards a world of belonging! (Penny has been practicing going through airline security on her own-see photo collage below from 2024. Now she’s ready for the next step!)

Such a beautiful story. We are Team Tripp!

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/17stS6u2ds/

I woke up today and saw a viral post by a pretty popular YouTuber. The post stated that they just found out half way through their pregnancy their new baby would have Down syndrome. They decided to abort and stated ā€œhopefully next time we have a better outcomeā€. While mentioning all the trials they may face if they didn’t abort.

People often ask me, ā€œif you could take away Tripps Down syndrome would you?ā€ And my answer is always, ā€œNo, if I took away his Down syndrome he wouldn’t be Tripp. But one thing I would change is how the world views him.ā€

Now don’t get me wrong Tripp is by no means ā€œeasyā€, but what kid is? I have 6 children, 1 who has down syndrome and I can tell you now ALL of them have their moments of ā€œnot easyā€. I’m 32 now and I’m sure I’m STILL not easy to my dad. That’s parent hood. That’s just apart of it. You just love them.

They also stated they would have to let the child live with them for ever if they didn’t abort. In 11 years of law enforcement I can not tell you how many calls I’ve went on that had adults living with their parents whether it was drug addiction, failed marriages, an accident that left them unable to take care of their self…what ever the case maybe. Just because your child doesn’t have Down syndrome doesn’t mean you won’t have to care for them forever. That’s the chance you take when you have a child. It’s part of it. You shouldn’t be able to just keep trying until you get the ā€œperfectā€ one, because the harsh reality is there isn’t a perfect one.

They stated they wouldn’t be able to mentally or emotionally accept this child… who’s to say their next child doesn’t have Down syndrome BUT grows up and has different beliefs than them religious, sexuality or what ever. Parents abandon their children all the time as teens because they don’t agree with their choices. Imagine if ultra sounds could predict those things how many would be aborted because they ā€œcouldn’t handle that.ā€ Kinda sad. Your job as a parent isn’t to ā€œpickā€ what your child will become, but to accept who they are and love them forever.

With Tripp I was told at 6 months he would NOT survive, he had 4 massive holes in his heart, misshaped, small brain and that IF he did survive he would be a burden on his siblings and society.. simply because he has Down Syndrome. Now I can think of alot of people who are a ā€œburdenā€ on society. Child predators, murders, etc. but once again, parents can’t predict their child will become those things.

Tripp was born perfectly healthy 5 pounds and 1 ounce, with Down Syndrome. I was SCARED to death. I had zero experience with Down syndrome, I’d been even up to that week advised to abort him. But I didn’t because none of us are perfect. But all of us deserve a chance. Even though I was scared.

Tripp beat all odds, he was born with no holes in his heart, no medical issues, perfect size brain, no typical eye or hearing issues that is common with Down syndrome, (only thing he really has is the ā€œstubbornā€disease…but we’re working on itšŸ˜‚) BUT if he did have any of those things, I’d still just love him.

When Tripp was born I really thought I’d have to teach him so much… and as much as I’ve taught him over the years he has by far taught me so much more. He’s taught me a different kind of love, patience, to slow down, and how amazing people with ANY disability truly are… and how much ability they actually have if we give them a chance. He taught me to be a better mother, and person in general.

Today he is a 6 year old wild boy who just graduated Pre-K and is officially headed to kindergarten. I’m thankful every day I never listened to those doctors who did nothing but tell me how horrible having him would be. At every appointment. Nothing positive, just negative things about how hard raising him would be. Down Syndrome does NOT mean not healthy, or not worthy.

I say all this to say if you are an expecting mom or dad and find out your baby has down syndrome I hope you know it’s not a death sentence for you… it’s actually something that will bring you more to life than you ever knew. These children are so so so smart, and so able.

I’m so so so proud to be your momma, baby boy! I love you, for exactly who you are. Forever.šŸ„¹šŸ’™šŸ’›
