To know me is to know my love and admiration for my mama!
You would never know by these pictures that she was wheelchair bound with severe CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome) when I was in third grade.
When you see me work with patients with autoimmune, pain and a nervous system that’s stuck, my learning did not start in the classroom or textbook. I had front row seats to the flares ups,her hand and leg would turn red swollen and not be able to be touched, the days she could barely get out of bed and the days she went to Salt Creek beach and put her leg in the sand, screaming and crying in pain determined to stand on it.
In 1995 she went to China with a group focused on eastern medicine to learn to heal. As she says she learned to “control the pain” but now that I think back to those days and stories…she kept her entire group laughing the whole trip. And even met a best friend with breast cancer, who moved into our home the following year while my mom cooked tintures of Chinese herbs, cared for her and made her laugh. Her friend Susie knew she was dying but wanted to be with my mom during her last months to laugh and to not have her immediate family remember her being so sick.
Her love for life and enthusiasm for everything she does and everyone she meets is contagious.
I could go on and on but most importantly want to wish her a very happy birthday and thank her for making our day to day work with her behind us doing the heavy lifting.
