As we head into the holidays, I put together some gentle, neuro-affirming suggestions to help ND kids, adults, and families navigate this season with a little more ease. Hope they’re helpful.

🕰 Therapist Tip Tuesday

The upcoming time change can be tough on sensitive systems — especially for kids (and adults!) who thrive on routine.

Start adjusting now:
– Shift bedtime and wake-up by 10–15 minutes each night
– Keep lights low and screens off 30 minutes before bed
– Use soft sounds or scent cues to signal rest

Small adjustments reduce dysregulation and make the “fall back” easier on everyone.

🍁 Therapist Tip Tuesday

Fall can be grounding — if we tune in with our senses.

Try this Fall Sensory Toolkit for regulation and co-regulation:
Scents: cinnamon, apple, pine, or coffee
Sounds: rain, rustling leaves, gentle music
Textures: soft blanket, smooth stones, warm mug, crunchy leaves

Sensory experiences help anchor the nervous system and restore balance.

Therapist Tip Tuesday

After a busy long weekend, routines help re-establish safety and predictability.

Try this simple Back-to-Routine Reset:
– Start the day with the same wake-up music 🎶
– Use a short visual schedule or checklist 🗓
– Keep breakfast familiar and consistent 🍳

These small anchors signal “we’re back” to the nervous system — supporting smoother transitions for kids and adults.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I’m reflecting on how much we still don’t know — and what that means.

We don’t have reliable data on autism in Indigenous communities. That silence speaks volumes.

It reflects histories of erasure, limited access, systemic trauma, and research that too often excludes the very people most impacted.

True equity means not only acknowledging these gaps but committing to change - listening to Indigenous voices, funding community-led research, and ensuring care that is not only neuro-affirming but also culturally responsive.
