Fruit and Veggies – More Matters Month

Fruits & Veggies—More Matters® Month is a time to promote the health benefits of eating a healthy, balanced diet that includes lots of fruits and vegetables.

Why eat more fruits and veggies?

To stay strong and active. Healthy foods like fruits and veggies have the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients your body needs.
To lower your health risks. Eating a healthy diet with lots of fruits and veggies can help you lower your risk for chronic health conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
To manage your weight. Eating healthy and getting physically activity can help you stay at a healthy weight.
To set a positive example. If you have children, how you eat can impact their food choices for years to come. Set them up for success!

National Sickle Cell Awareness Month

About 1 in 13 African Americans carry the sickle cell trait, and many do not know they have it.

SCD affects about 100,000 Americans and disproportionately impacts Black and Hispanic communities.

The condition causes rigid, sickle‑shaped red blood cells that can block blood flow, trigger severe pain crises, and lead to complications such as stroke and organ damage.
Awareness efforts help dispel myths, encourage screening, and promote investment in research and treatment.

that people can be exposed to rabies through physical contact with bats or if the bat is found in the home, even if they didn’t know they were bitten? Bat bites can be tiny, and you may not be able to see any bite marks. 🦇

➡️If you’ve been bitten by a bat, wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical care right away.
➡️If you may have been exposed to a bat, but are not sure, call your local health department to assess your rabies exposure risk.
➡️If you can collect the bat safely (without having direct physical contact with the bat), that will help to figure out if the bat has rabies.

For more information about what to do visit https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/prevention/bats.html or contact your local health department.

The Pitt/Dan & Southside Health District team had our annual Fun Day at World of Sports in Halifax on Friday, August 21.🎳 Our offices closed for the day and gave the staff the opportunity to see their friends & colleagues from across both districts while enjoying a break from their day-to-day responsibilities (for the most part). Our morning started with lots of bowling, some crafts, and card games, followed by a salad & pizza lunch with afternoon opportunities to play arcade games, go-karts, and laser tag.🍕
