We're constantly marketed products that tell us we need to "biohack" our bodies to get them to behave. When you realize how ingeniously and carefully our bodies were designed, it's hard to fathom how much the health and wellness industries have reshaped our perception of what "healthy" really means. The term "biohacking," as it's applied colloquially, is like pouring gasoline on a fire. You can't out-hack a processed food diet, chronic lack of sleep, and overwork. No amount of bulletproof coffee can do that...

Chinese medicine seeks to align your body with its natural rhythms by gracefully guiding the body back into balance. Restoring balance means we want to see you eating, sleeping, feeling and moving well. With acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary and lifestyle changes, we shift the body into a sustainable state of wellness.

Medications and supplements can impact a patient's tongue, pulse and overall clinical picture. As part of our role as integrated health care practitioners, many Chinese medicine schools incorporate training in understanding Western drugs through the lens of Eastern energetics.

When we feel pulses or look at a patient's tongue, knowing what other herbs, supplements or drugs they take helps us to assess their overall health picture with additional context.

I took my very first Chinese medicine pulse diagnosis class when I was in nursing school (thanks to a supportive professor who sensed this was my calling). In that first set of classes, I had no idea what I was feeling. It took years of practice, thousands of repetitions, and multiple specialized courses during my graduate program to be able to feel and apply pulse diagnosis concepts clinically.

When we take pulses in Chinese medicine, we feel various areas of the wrists on both sides to gather more specific information about the flow and function of acupuncture channels. Pulse diagnosis is just one piece of the puzzle when assessing and treating patients.

If you’re interested in learning what your pulses may indicate or want to learn more about our clinic, visit unwindacupuncture.com or call (859) 287-1097.

Patients might feel a variety of different ways after acupuncture treatment. I usually recommend that patients plan to relax for some time after acupuncture rather than rushing back to work or errands, allowing their body more time to integrate the work done during the session. After a session, you might feel tired, relaxed, hungry, less bloated, need to urinate, or even feel a boost of energy. If you ever have questions after a session, your acupuncturist is the best person to talk to. Knowing how you feel and how you respond to treatment also helps us tailor the next session as we continue to support your wellness goals.

If you have questions about acupuncture, visit our website, unwindacupuncture.com or call (859) 287-1097.

As many of you know, we’re welcoming our second child in just a few short weeks. Our last planned day in the clinic is currently September 12th. We’re working almost right up to our due date, so we’re crossing our fingers that our little lady stays put until then. If you contact the clinic while we are out on maternity leave, please anticipate a delay in our normal response times.

If you are a new patient and would like to be notified about our return to clinic, please send an email to [email protected] and include your name, email, and phone number. If you are not an existing patient and have questions, please contact us via email as we will have more flexibility with asynchronous responses vs. coordinating call backs around a toddler’s and newborn’s nap times. Existing patients should still use the Practice Better patient portal as their preferred contact method for questions or herbal refills. Texts to the clinic phone number will not receive a response.

We’re so appreciative of all of the support and excitement our community has shown as we await our newest family member’s arrival!

Ear seeds are a wonderful way to promote stimulation on auricular or ear acupuncture points that we sometimes send patients home with. The ear has over 100 acupuncture points on it and we incorporate those points in treatments by either needling or applying these special acupressure stickers.

We’ve seen influencers borrowing tools from the treatment room like gua sha tools, ear seeds and other things. Please understand the training of the individual giving you information about use and safety of medical tools. We see prolific misuse of these tools on social media. Although ear seeds seem harmless, they can be powerful tools to support your wellness and should be utilized with intention and care by qualified providers.
