All so-called diseases are crises of toxemia.” - John Henry Tilden

Dr. John H. Tilden (1851–1940) was an American physician, author, and one of the influential voices within the early Natural Hygiene movement. Throughout his career, he questioned the medical thinking of his time and explored the relationship between health, lifestyle, nutrition, and the environment. I’ve recently written more about Dr. Tilden, his ideas, and the concept of toxemia in my blog here: https://canine-wellness-specialist.uk/2026/05/01/terrain-model-vs-germ-theory-a-forgotten-debate-in-modern-medicine/

One of his most recognised ideas was that the body is not the enemy. Rather than viewing disease as a collection of unrelated problems, he believed that symptoms were expressions of an underlying imbalance within the body, a concept he referred to as “toxemia.”

Whether or not you agree with his philosophy, his work invites us to consider an important question:

Why has the body become unwell in the first place?

If these conditions were simply an unavoidable part of life, wouldn’t we expect to see far more puppies born already showing signs of chronic illness?

Yet many dogs enter life appearing healthy and only begin developing problems months or even years later.

This raises an important question: what happened between birth and the appearance of symptoms? What influences shaped the body along the way?

Today, we have a diagnosis for almost everything: IBD, pancreatitis, allergies, seizures, arthritis, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, cancer, skin disease, ear infections, obesity, anxiety, autoimmune conditions, and many more.

But in our search for labels, have we sometimes lost sight of the bigger picture?

The body is not designed to work against itself. Symptoms are a form of communication. They are often the body’s way of signalling that something needs attention.

Long before a diagnosis, the body often whispers.

The itchy paws.
The recurring ear infections.
The tear stains.
The constant licking.
The digestive upset.
The unpleasant breath.
The poor coat quality.
The changes in behaviour.
The loss of vitality.

These signs are not meaningless. They are messages worth listening to.

Instead of asking only, “What disease is this?” perhaps we should also ask:

“What factors may have contributed to the body reaching this point?”

Nutrition. Chronic stress. Environmental exposures. Chemical burdens. Poor sleep. Lack of appropriate exercise and enrichment. A lifestyle that does not fully support a dog’s natural needs. Even the emotional environment within the home may influence a dog’s overall wellbeing.

Dogs are highly perceptive animals. They often respond to the emotional atmosphere around them, and ongoing stress or tension within their environment can affect their own state of balance.

Chronic health issues rarely appear overnight. The body is constantly adapting and compensating, sometimes for years, until its ability to maintain balance becomes overwhelmed.

👀 Our dogs are communicating with us all the time. They are showing us the signs, we simply need to learn how to listen.

📩 If you’re ready to look beyond the symptoms and explore the bigger picture of your dog’s health, I offer one-to-one consultations to help identify potential contributing factors and create a more personalised approach to supporting their wellbeing.

💭 If this has made you look at your dog’s health differently, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Looking back, what is one thing you wish you had understood sooner about your dog’s wellbeing?

Maybe it was a subtle sign you missed, a change you noticed too late, or something you now approach differently. Your experience may help someone else recognise the signs their own dog is showing them. 💚

Wondering what glyphosate, w**d killer, and pesticide applications do? We test for this and it’s in people’s bodies. A slow accumulation of poison. If it kills what is outside, it kills what is inside the body, including your good gut bacteria. This stuff needs to be banned!

The picture on the left was my son after more than a gallon of glyphosate was tipped over his neck and shoulders during a work accident. This is why I won't stay quiet. My healthy, 6 ft 5, 18 year old son was taken down to 125 pounds after glyphosate seeped into his pores.

That picture? He'd turned a corner then. We all felt like he just might make it. We were celebrating. He could stand. He could get out of his hospital bed. He didn't want a picture taken at his worst - with no hair from rounds and rounds of chemo, looking more shrunken, bigger tumors. A few months before this left picture, he was at death's door, stage 4 lymphoma and the doctors didn't give us much hope he would live.

I'm one of the fortunate mothers. My son battled like a warrior. He survived and the right picture is him now. But there was a brutal seven year battle with all the alternative methods, all the chemo... so much that he became chemo resistant. Then when nothing else would stop the tumors from growing back, a stem cell transplant that wiped out his whole immune system in the hope it would restart. Many mothers.... many families are not so fortunate. They lost their loved one.

Last week the Supreme Court voted 7 to 2 that glyphosate didn't need a cancer warning. Monsanto won. Bayer won. Two of the largest companies in the world won against thousands of families. My son, our entire family and thousands of others families who have had glyphosate impact their lives felt this blow in our guts.

Eleven years ago the WHO announced it "probably causes cancer." We want the "probably" word gone. We want this monster named for who it is and what it does.

We lost the fight last week. But the battle will keep going. Mothers like me won't stop. Because we know.

A case report published in Integrative Medicine: A Clinician's Journal described the remarkable recovery of a single child with autism spectrum disorder after treatment with the antifungal drug itraconazole (Sporanox®).

According to the authors, the child had urine markers suggesting Aspergillus fungal colonization and underwent several months of antifungal therapy while being closely monitored with regular liver function tests. Over approximately three months, the child's autism symptoms reportedly resolved completely, coinciding with a 97–99% reduction in urine markers associated with Aspergillus.

The authors proposed that fungal toxins might have contributed to the child's symptoms and suggested that antifungal treatment could have played a role in the recovery.
