May 14th is Apraxia Awareness Day, a day to raise awareness and deepen understanding of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), a complex motor speech disorder affecting children and their families.

CAS is a neurological speech disorder. “Neurological” simply means speech starts in the brain, not in the mouth. A child with CAS knows what they want to say, but their brain has difficulty planning and coordinating the movements needed for speech.

At Lindsay Scott SLP & CO., we are committed to providing evidence-based assessment and treatment for children with CAS while supporting the clinicians and families who help these children build confidence and find their voices every day.

May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month 💬👂✨

Communication isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s about being heard, understood, and valued. 🤍

Shoutout to the clients, families, educators, and SLPs who advocate, support, and make meaningful connections happen every day.

Continuing Autism Awareness Month with key takeaways from “Supporting Autistic Well-Being in Secondary Schools: Moving From Participation to Belonging.”

True support isn’t just about building individual skills, environment matters just as much. When we listen to autistic students and understand their daily experiences, we can create spaces where they feel genuinely accepted… and that sense of belonging is what truly impacts quality of life.

Many kids use their special interests (SpIns) as a built-in coping strategy 🧠✨

These interests help them make sense of and connect with the world around them. Use of a spinner provides visual, tactile, and vestibular sensory input that aids in self-regulation, grounding, and focus. For many, it becomes “the lens through which they see the world.” 💛

✨ Rethinking “Repetitive Behaviors” in Autism ✨

Recent research review from the informed SLP, “Spinning and SpIn-ing: Re-framing restricted/repetitive behaviors and specific interests” shared directly from individuals with autistic and the benefit of their repetitive behaviors and special interests.

For a long time, behaviors like hand flapping, pacing, or intense interests were seen as something to stop. But research, and autistic voices, tell us something important: These behaviors are often helpful, not harmful.

Not all behaviors need to be “fixed.” Sometimes, they’re exactly what helps a child feel safe, calm, and understood.

On World Autism Day, we celebrate every unique voice, spoken or unspoken💙

Autism acceptance means understanding, embracing & celebrating our unique ways of thinking and our strengths not just our struggles.

Although being autistic may bring challenges, we also have many positives that aren’t spoken about as much.

Every experience is different and autism is a spectrum so these may not relate to everyone. We all have individual skills, attributes & characteristics that are unique to us. That is the power of neurodiversity.
