Tamala Powell Joye

Tamala Ann “Tammy” Powell Joye, age 66, passed away suddenly Saturday, October 10th, 2026 at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Born in Georgetown, SC on April 6th, 1960, she is the daughter of the late Joseph David Powell and Annie Jo Taylor Powell. Graduating from Hemingway High School in 1978, she married Michael, with whom she built a life centered on love, family, and caring for others.

Tammy was a woman whose heart was as generous as her spirit was warm. While her family was always at the center of her world, she dedicated much of her life to caring for children. She worked for many years in school cafeterias where they were stationed and lived. For Tammy, her work was about far more than serving meals. It was an opportunity to care for others, offer comfort, and make a difference in someone’s day.

Her compassion was genuine, her generosity came from the heart, and her love for others was evident in the way she lived. Her legacy is found not only in the family she loved dearly, but also in the lives she touched through her work, her friendship, and her willingness to help whenever she could. Though her passing leaves a space that cannot be filled, the love that she gave will continue to live on.

Tammy will be remembered for her loving heart, her generous spirit, her devotion to family, and her unwavering willingness to care for others. Her life made a difference, and her memory will remain a blessing to all her loved her. She showed those around her that caring for others did not require anything special, only a willing heart.

With Michael’s retirement from the Marines, she moved to Darlington in 2005 to be near her mother and sisters.

She attended Southside Free Will Baptist Church for many years until she was not physically able. She was deeply involved with her church.

Above all, Tammy cherished her family. She is survived by her husband of 48 years; Michael, their children; Gerald David “Bubba” (Mindy Leigh) Joye of Summerville, Jeromy Joye of Darlington, mother-in-law; Janie Hayes, grandchildren; Shelby Alexis and Charles Michael Joye, her loving sisters; Pricilla Jo Groude and Philisa Jo Floyd, and Tammy’s best friends ever; Venny Hurst of Jacksonville, NC and Teresa Strickland of Darlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister; Teresa Powell, and her brothers-in-law; Randy Goude and Wesley Floyd.

Services celebrating Tammy’s life will be held in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home at 4:00 pm Wednesday, October 14th. The family will receive friends and loved ones prior to the service from 3:00 pm until 3:50 pm. Tammy will be laid to rest the following day at Florence National Cemetery.

May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love of the Lord she worshipped, and the love of those whose lives she touched. Though she may be gone from our sight, the kindness she shared, the love that she gave, and the memories she created will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials are suggested to Southside Free Will Baptist Church.

Joseph Engrim Tucker, Jr.

Joseph Engrim Tucker, Jr., of Darlington, South Carolina, passed away on October 3, 2026, at P*e Dee Gardens in Florence. He was 90 years old. The family will receive friends at Belk Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 3rd, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 7th, at 2:00 pm at Lake City Memorial Park.

Born August 25, 1936, in Kingstree, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Joseph Engrim Tucker, Sr. and Eudora Burgess Tucker. He was raised in Lake City and attended The Citadel for two years. He served in the National Guard and later worked as a civilian for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Mr. Tucker was a licensed land surveyor in South Carolina for nearly 60 years. As the owner of Tucker Land Surveying, he served Darlington County and communities throughout the P*e Dee until retiring at age 72. Over the course of his long career, he surveyed much of the residential land, woods, and swamps of the region he knew so well.

On October 9, 1967, he married Marjorie Anne Phipps. They shared 58 years of marriage before her death in November 2025.

Mr. Tucker was a faithful member of Darlington Presbyterian Church and a longtime member of the Darlington Lions Club, where he served for a time as club president.

He is survived by his son, Joey Tucker (Libby) of Lexington; his daughter, Emily Tucker Magnus (Ryan) of Darlington; his grandsons, Jonathan Tucker and Finn Magnus; his sister, Martha Tucker Poston of Lake City; his sister-in-law, Janis Tucker; his brother-in-law, George Lyerly; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, Marjorie, he was predeceased by his brother, Bobby Tucker; his sister-in-law, Martha Phipps Lyerly; his brothers-in-law, Jimmie Phipps (and wife Clary), and Larry (Dobbin) Poston.

He was known by different names to different people - Engrim, Joe, J.E., Daddy, and Poppee. Regardless of what they called him, those who knew him will remember a quiet, honest, hardworking, and unassuming man who loved his family and the land he called home.

The family would like to thank the staff of P*e Dee Gardens and Agape Hospice for the care they provided to Mr. Tucker since entering their care in May.
