When Shelly, a 50-year smoker, received a letter offering her a free CT lung cancer screening, she thought “Sure, why not?”

The first screening led to yearly lung screenings at MercyOne and the discovery of a lung growth that had doubled in size from the year before. A biopsy, using robotic Ion technology, found lung cancer.

Thanks to yearly screening, the cancer was detected at an early stage – before Shelly even had symptoms - and removed with robotic-assisted surgery. A year later, she's still cancer-free and never had to undergo chemotherapy or radiation.

“Without the yearly screenings, I probably wouldn’t have been diagnosed with lung cancer until I had symptoms, and the disease had spread and was more difficult to treat.”

When you meet Bryce, 6, of Bettendorf, he’ll likely ask you which car brand you drive or what toothpaste you use.

What you might not realize is just how far he’s come.

Born at 26 weeks with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, Bryce once couldn’t walk or speak. Today, thanks to the team at MercyOne Genesis Bettendorf Pediatric Therapy, he’s a “chatterbox,” as his mother says, going from non-speaking to full conversations in just 11 months.

After surgery and intensive physical and occupational therapy, Bryce recently took his first independent steps — a moment his family calls extraordinary.

From learning to communicate to walking, writing and gaining independence, Bryce’s journey is filled with big milestones made possible by hard work, dedicated therapists and a whole lot of heart.

“His growth has been just amazing,” his mom shared. “We think of everyone there like family.”
