Fall in South Florida may not bring cooler temperatures, but seasonal changes can still bring new risks for pets.
Here are 5 fall-related emergencies to keep on your radar:
Chocolate & Xylitol Ingestion - Halloween treats can be especially tempting for pets. Chocolate can be toxic to dogs and cats, while xylitol, a sweetener found in some sugar-free products, can cause dangerous drops in blood sugar and other serious effects.
Heat Illness - Fall temperatures in South Florida can still be hot enough to cause heat-related illness. Exercise, outdoor activities, and time in hot or poorly ventilated areas can put pets at risk, even when it doesnāt feel like summer.
Snake Bites - Snakes remain active in South Florida, and curious pets may encounter them while spending time outdoors. A snake bite can cause swelling, pain, weakness, and other serious complications and should be treated as an emergency.
Allergic Reactions - Pets can experience allergic reactions after insect stings, bites, or exposure to plants and other environmental allergens. Facial swelling, hives, vomiting, difficulty breathing, or sudden weakness can require immediate veterinary attention.
Outdoor Injuries - More time outdoors can mean more opportunities for injuries, including being hit by a vehicle, animal encounters, falls, or other accidents. Even if your pet appears okay after an injury, internal trauma may not always be immediately obvious.
If your pet experiences any of these emergencies or you are concerned they may have been exposed to something harmful, seek veterinary care promptly.
