A baby who cannot sustain a suck long enough to finish a feed gets labeled the same way almost every time. Posterior tongue tie. Refer for frenotomy.
But the hypoglossal canal sits right next to the atlas. Subluxate that joint and the tongue loses strength and coordination. It looks exactly like a tie. It is not a tie. It is a nerve under pressure.
