🫀 HEART ATTACK vs CARDIAC ARREST: Know the Difference

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they are very different medical emergencies requiring different responses.

🫀 HEART ATTACK (Plumbing Problem):
• A blockage in a coronary artery.
• The person is usually conscious and breathing.
• Blood flow is cut off, but the heart is still beating.

⚠️ Signs:
• Chest pain, pressure, or squeezing.
• Pain in the arm, jaw, back, neck, or stomach.
• Shortness of breath, nausea, or cold sweat.
• Women: fatigue, anxiety, and back pain.

🆘 What to Do:
1️⃣ Call 911.
2️⃣ Have them sit down and rest.
3️⃣ Loosen tight clothing.
4️⃣ Help with prescribed nitroglycerin or aspirin (325 mg) to chew.
5️⃣ Stay with them until help arrives.

💔 CARDIAC ARREST (Electrical Problem):
• The heart stops beating effectively.
• Sudden collapse and unresponsive.
• No breathing or only gasping.

⚠️ Signs:
• Sudden collapse.
• Unresponsive.
• Not breathing normally.

🆘 What to Do:
1️⃣ Call 911.
2️⃣ Start CPR immediately (100-120 bpm).
3️⃣ Use an AED as soon as possible.
4️⃣ Continue until EMS arrives.

💡 A heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest. Getting trained in CPR and First Aid means you're ready for both.

🩸 BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS: Safety First

When providing first aid, your safety comes first. Bloodborne pathogens (BBPs) are viruses and bacteria found in human blood that can cause serious disease.

⚠️ Common BBPs: Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and HIV.

🛡️ STANDARD PRECAUTIONS:
1️⃣ Always use barrier devices: gloves are essential.
2️⃣ Use a CPR mask or face shield for rescue breaths.
3️⃣ Wear eye protection if splashing is possible.
4️⃣ Use a gown or apron if there's a risk of contamination.

🧤 PROPER GLOVE USE:
• Check for tears before use.
• Change gloves between patients.
• Remove without touching the outside (peel-off method).
• Wash hands immediately after removing gloves.
• Do NOT reuse disposable gloves.

🧼 AFTER PROVIDING CARE:
1️⃣ Remove gloves carefully: inside out.
2️⃣ Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
3️⃣ Dispose of materials in a biohazard bag.
4️⃣ Clean surfaces with a 10% bleach solution.
5️⃣ Report any exposure incidents immediately.

🩹 IF EXPOSED:
1️⃣ Wash the area or flush eyes immediately.
2️⃣ Report the incident to your supervisor.
3️⃣ Seek medical evaluation within 2 hours.
4️⃣ Follow post-exposure protocols.

✅ Proper PPE and training mean you can help others safely. BBP training is included in our First Aid and CPR certification courses.
