They Stopped Paying. Now What?
When child support or spousal support payments suddenly stop, many people immediately search: “How do I enforce a support order?”
Court enforcement may be appropriate, but it is not always the only first step.
Sometimes nonpayment is connected to a real change in circumstances, such as a job loss, reduced income, unexpected expenses, or another financial hardship. When circumstances have changed, mediation can provide a structured setting to discuss what happened and whether a modification should be considered.
A mediated support modification can help parents or former spouses:
• Understand why payments stopped
• Review current income and financial circumstances
• Discuss child support or spousal support modifications
• Explore realistic options for moving forward
• Work toward an agreement before conflict escalates
If someone is intentionally avoiding their obligations, legal enforcement may still be necessary. But when circumstances have genuinely changed, understanding the problem can be the first step toward resolving it.
