Pharmacy school trains you for a lot of things. What it doesn't teach you is that it's okay to want something different than the 9-to-5, or where to find the courage to build something of your own.

We train for years, and "become a pharmacist" quietly becomes "stay a pharmacist until retirement." For some of us, that's not enough.

My guest Nicole Grams put words to that exact moment.

What would you build if the traditional path wasn't the only option?

My guest Nicole Grams said something that stopped me. She used to call herself an "open-minded skeptic," fascinated by astrology and human design but convinced talking about it would be career su***de.

It landed because I have my own version. When I first explored psychedelics, my instinct was the same: I'm a licensed pharmacist, but I can't lose my license over this.

Turns out the path can hold more than we think.

What have you kept separate from your career? πŸ‘‡

Nicole Grams didn't set out to be a functional medicine pharmacist. A move into a prevention-focused pharmacy put her around colleagues using nutrition and supplements to help patients.

She got IFM certified, then started small: statin patients about CoQ10, metformin patients about B12. She made shelf signs that said "ask Nicole."

Patients started asking questions, then came back saying they felt better.

That small shift carried her into functional medicine and Human Design coaching. The full episode walks through that whole path, including the uncertain parts.

What small shift changed how you practice? πŸ‘‡

πŸŽ™οΈ A new episode of the podcast is live, and my guest is Nicole Grams, PharmD, IFMCP, NBC-HWC, Central Region Lead for Functional Medicine Pharmacists Alliance.

Nicole's career has never followed one straight line πŸ“ˆ

βœ… Community pharmacy.
βœ… Functional medicine certification.
βœ… A stint at a veterinary pharmacy that had nothing to do with her long-term plan.
βœ… Pharm to Table.
βœ… FMPhA.
βœ… And somewhere in the middle of all of it, she found Human Design and built an entire coaching practice around it.

She says she has six different jobs now and would not give up a single one.

We talk about how her curiosity about the microbiome led her into environmental health, how she brought functional medicine into an everyday community pharmacy practice, and what Human Design actually is.

If you are a pharmacist who feels the pull toward something more aligned but assumes you need one clear plan before you start, this episode might change your mind.

One of Dr. Veronica Riera-Gillie's students used to say: "our breath doesn't lie."

That student, an asthmatic, felt short of breath one day with none of her usual triggers. She remembered that line, paused, and called her doctor instead of reaching for her inhaler again. She was in AFib.

Catching it early may have prevented a clot. She told Veronica: "you saved my life."

Sometimes the most powerful intervention is teaching someone to notice their own body.

I had the pleasure to present a CE on the Functional Medicine Approach to the Age-Friendly 4M’s at the ASCP Midwest Regional Meeting πŸ’œ Here’s a sneak peak, but we went deep into this in our live Age-Friendly Pharmacist Functional Medicine Pharmacists Alliance Cohort. Those recordings are still available in our member portal if you’d like to join. I love this framework: when we focus on the person & What Matter Most to *them*, the rest will follow. πŸ’—

Dr. Veronica Riera-Gilley was one of three pharmacists at her first functional medicine conference. People assumed she was just there to push pills.

Her answer: we solve polypharmacy by asking why a patient's blood pressure is high, not just handing over a pill to bring it down. Sometimes that means a lower dose. Sometimes real lifestyle changes. It all counts.

Where could asking "why" change how you practice? πŸ‘‡

07/16/2026

I just published my very first podcast interview, and I could not have asked for a better guest to start with: Dr. Veronica Riera-Gilley, FMPhA's new Executive Director.

If you have been part of our community for a while, you already know Veronica. She has spent years showing up for our members, first as membership director, then as director of partnerships, and now leading FMPhA into its next chapter. But in this episode, I wanted to go back further. I wanted to know how she actually got here.

Veronica's shift from traditional pharmacy into functional medicine did not start with a plan. It started with a yoga class that led her to a conference where she heard the words "functional medicine" for the first time. She was one of three pharmacists in the room.

From there it was years of quietly building a functional medicine lens inside a traditional pharmacy career, long before she ever stepped away from it.

This is a transformation worth watching. Full conversation is live now. https://youtu.be/k50tgzW2bmY

What is one small step you have taken toward the practice you actually want to have?

who knew starting a podcast would be such a joy? 😁
