VITAS Healthcare began with a simple belief shared by two caregivers in , FL.📍

Rev. Hugh Westbrook and nurse Esther Colliflower saw that people facing the end of life needed comfort, understanding and the chance to remain at home surrounded by those they loved.

With the help of , they began offering support rooted in compassion and connection.

Then came a moment that became part of history. In 1977, at a conference focused on caring for the dying, they posted a handwritten sign on a banyan tree that said Hospice Advocates: Meet Here. Under that tree, a small group gathered to imagine a better kind of care, one that honored dignity and embraced the full needs of each person.

Only a year later, this grassroots vision became one of the nation's first programs in Miami.

Their work helped shape the interdisciplinary team approach that remains central to hospice care today.

The spirit that began under the banyan tree still guides VITAS. Every day, our teams serve with empathy, lift up families during vulnerable moments and provide care that respects the dignity and wishes of every patient.💜
