Madison Leach Taylor

Madison “Matt” Leach Taylor passed peacefully into the presence of God on October 2, 2026.

Matt was born in Holmes County, Mississippi on April 15, 1935, to Virginia Leach and Madison H. Taylor. After his father’s service in WWII, the family settled in Biloxi, where Matt flourished as a young man. He played football for Biloxi High School, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and spent countless hours on the water and in the woods with classmates.

After graduating from Biloxi High School in 1953, Matt attended Mississippi State University. He met Mary Ellen Palmer there and they married upon his graduation in 1957. Matt graduated from USMC Officer Candidate School in that same year and began his military career. During his service he completed Basic School, Communications Officer School, Cryptology School, and USMC Command and Staff College.

The family grew as they moved from one assignment to the next. Daughter, Terri, was born in Quantico, Virginia. Daughter, Jane, was born in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and son, Mike, in Hawaii.

Matt’s military career took him around the world and offered him the opportunity to lead and influence many young Marines. He served with distinction in a variety of line and staff roles, but he particularly excelled at life in “the field.”

At every stop in his military career, Matt was committed to the churches he belonged to. He served without fanfare in whatever capacity he was needed with his characteristic quiet leadership.

In 1977 he retired from active duty as a Lieutenant Colonel and moved to Mississippi. He worked in insurance, encouraged trees to grow faster and enjoyed being near extended family for the first time in his adult life. Matt and Mary Ellen lived on their land in Kemper County for over 25 years with summers spent with grandchildren taking them on four-wheeler and tractor rides, teaching them how to drive his truck, feeding the deer and slicing watermelons.

In 2009 Mary Ellen and Matt moved permanently to their vacation home in Alligator Point, Florida where he could fish every day off his own pier. He enjoyed fishing with his brother-in-law, Lee Palmer, exploring the beaches and marshes, and befriending the bald eagles. In Florida he introduced his grandchildren to saltwater fishing, crabbing, throwing a cast net and the proper way to handle stingrays.

In 2017, they moved north of Atlanta to be near daughter Jane DeGrood and her family. There Matt enjoyed time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren and took care of Mary Ellen until her death in 2024. Matt remained active enjoying a veteran's group, Bible study, and a lunch group. He met life’s challenges with the same unshakeable faith, determination, good humor and quiet strength that characterized his life. With these qualities, Matt formed lifelong friendships in high school, the Marine Corps, work, church homes, and throughout his life.

Matt is preceded in death by his parents, Madison H. Taylor and Virginia Leach Taylor; his wife, Mary Ellen Palmer Taylor; and his brother, James “Jim” Taylor.

He is survived by daughters, Terri (Burl) McClendon of Austin, Texas and Jane (Paul) DeGrood of Flowery Branch, Georgia and son, Mike (Becky) Taylor of Brookhaven, Mississippi; along with eight grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and two cousins.

The funeral service will be held at De Kalb Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 9, 2026. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Samaritan's Purse.

We are proud to support the arrival of the Tribute Vietnam Veteran Wall, which will be on display in Meridian from October 8th through October 11th.

Visiting this moving tribute is an important opportunity for our community to come together, reflect, and honor the brave men and women who served our nation during the Vietnam War. It serves as a powerful reminder of our shared American history and the deep sacrifices made for our freedom.

At our Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes and Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, supporting our veterans is a cause close to our hearts. Almost all of us have veterans within our families or are veterans ourselves. We remain fully committed to honoring and remembering every single person who has worn the uniform in service to our country.

We encourage everyone in our surrounding communities to take time between October 8–11 to visit the memorial, pay your respects, and honor the legacy of our heroes.

September 11, 2001, changed our lives forever. Amid the heartbreak, our nation responded with extraordinary love, strength, and unity. We set aside differences to care for neighbors and strangers alike, standing shoulder to shoulder as one community.
Today, we honor the courage of every first responder, firefighter, officer, and selfless citizen who ran toward danger to save others, as well as every innocent life lost.
It is heartbreaking that it often takes a tragedy to bring out our deepest compassion. The true lesson of 9/11 is that we shouldn't wait for a crisis to hold space for one another. Let's honor those we lost by choosing kindness, empathy, and unity—not just today, but every single day.

James "Jimmy" Roger Bryan

Services for James Bryan will be held Saturday, August 1, 2026, 11:00 a.m. at Binnsville Church with Bro. Chris Gully officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

James Roger Bryan, known to all as Jimmy, was born on August 9, 1940, the second of five children born to Leo and Blanche Bryan. He attended Margie B. Aust Elementary and later high school and college at EMJC. In his early working years, Jimmy spent time driving a truck for Bryan Foods in West Point. He made many lifetime friends during those years. It was on one of those trips that he met his future wife, Mattie Price. The two were married on March 11, 1966, and together they built a life centered on love and family togetherness , raising three children—Rosie, Doug, and Carol. Jimmy adored his children and wanted nothing more than seeing them happy. Later in his life there would be grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Jimmy Bryan is a man who has never met a stranger. He has a way of striking up a conversation with anyone he meets, and before long, they’re no longer strangers—they’re friends.

He has always had a deep love for the outdoors. Whether it was hunting deer, squirrels, birds, and rabbits, or spending a quiet day fishing, Jimmy found joy in nature. But more than anything, he cherished the time spent with the people he loved. In the camp house he built, he gathered family and friends, sharing stories of his hunts and adventures, captivating everyone who listened. And there was nothing he loved better than going on camping trips with his wife and children.

Jimmy’s heart has always been rooted in generosity. He finds more happiness in giving than receiving, and that kindness has touched countless lives. Over the years, whether through his work or daily life, he built lasting friendships with so many people who came to know him not just for a conversation, but for his warmth and genuine spirit.

His nieces and nephews adore him, often gathering close just to hear his stories those unforgettable “tall tales” that only Uncle Jimmy could tell.

Jimmy loved spending time with old friends and catching up on life. He spent much time with his friend Blll from Tennessee and together they would plan all kind of hunting and fishing outings, but mostly they just told tall tales of the outings from long ago.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his mother and father, Blanche and Leo Bryan, his wife , Mattie Price Bryan, his granddaughter Gloria Edward’s, his Brother and sister-in-law, Sonny and Mary Bryan, and his sister Latitia McDade.

He is survived by his son Douglas Bryan, his daughter, Carol Rigdon, (Adam), his stepdaughter Rosie Spencer, grandsons Justin Edwards,(Nicole), Austin Edwards, granddaughter Tiffany Marion, (Tyler), and several great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother Marvin(Bubba) Bryan, (Jan ) and a sister Anne Grove, (John) , and a brother-in-law Bobby McDade and numerous nieces and nephews

Jimmy loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and lived with the blessed assurance of eternal life. He looked forward to the day he would be reunited with his Savior in Heaven, a hope that gave him peace and guided his life. He was a member of the United Methodist church in Binnsville and later when he couldn’t go to church to worship he watched several different preachers on local tv.

Pallbearers will include Ben McDade, Rick Haskins, Timmy Bryan, Bryan Grove, Eric Bryan, and Mike Manley.

Honorary Pallbearers will include Bill Allen, Brad Bounds, Johnny Moore, and Jamie Ivy.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Binnsville Cemetery Fund 6657 Binnsville Road, Scooba, MS 39358.

Visitation will be held Friday, July 31, 2026, 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Webb & Stephens Funeral Home-DeKalb and an hour prior to service at the church on Saturday.
