Keep Little Ones Safe in the Summer Heat
Hot weather can be especially dangerous for babies and young children. As temperatures rise, remember these simple heat safety tips:

1. Keep children well hydrated by offering water often.
2. Dress them in lightweight, light-colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat
when outdoors.
3. Plan outdoor activities during the cooler morning or evening hours and
take frequent breaks in the shade.
4. Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle—even for a moment.
5. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (for children 6 months and older) and
reapply as directed.
6. Babies younger than 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight
whenever possible.

Knowing the signs of heat-related illness—such as excessive sleepiness, irritability, dizziness, nausea or a high body temperature—can help you act quickly if your child becomes overheated.
From pregnancy through your child's early years, Decatur Morgan OB-GYN is here to support your growing family.

Stay cool and safe this summer! Extremely high temperatures can be extra tough when you're expecting. Because pregnancy naturally raises your core body temperature, you are more vulnerable to dehydration and heat exhaustion.

Here are a few quick ways to protect yourself and your baby when the thermometer spikes:
•Hydrate constantly: Drink plenty of water throughout the day—don’t wait
until you're already thirsty.
•Time it right: Try to avoid outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day
(usually between 10 AM and 4 PM).
•Dress lightly: Wear loose, breathable, light-colored clothing to help your
body stay cool.
•Know the warning signs: Pay attention if you start feeling dizzy, nauseous,
excessively sweaty, or faint.

If you ever feel overwhelmed by the heat or experience worrisome symptoms, head into the A/C right away and reach out to your care team.
