“Despite the devastating flood in Nepal that destroyed countless homes and lives, the stupa holding HH Penor Rinpoche’s relics remained miraculously untouched. To many, it stands as a powerful sign, that compassion, faith, and blessings can endure even the fiercest storms. In a time of great loss, this sacred monument offers hope, reminding us that some things are beyond destruction and that peace, like the relic within, can never be washed away.
May all those who affected by the flood be healed and all those who have lost their lives, may all be reborn in the field of Guru Rinpoche.”

When despair for the world grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.”

Remembering Dolly Parton 💖

“I just came across this photo of Dolly Parton doing yoga with her teacher, Larry Payne.

After a sweet little moment of reflection, my immediate thought was…

Of course Dolly was a yogi.

And I don’t mean simply because of how she looks, her flexibility, or whether she ever rolled out a yoga mat.

I mean the way she has lived her life.

There is something deeply yogic about staying rooted in who you are while living in a world that constantly tries to tell you who to be.

About knowing your worth without needing to diminish yourself or someone else.

About finding joy, sharing what you have, lifting others up, laughing at yourself, working hard, loving deeply, giving generously, and continuing to show up as you through every season of life.

Yoga, to me, has never just been about putting your body into a shape.

It is a practice of coming home to yourself.

Of learning how to hold both strength and softness.

Of staying connected to your center when life gets loud.

Of recognizing that we are all connected and allowing that awareness to shape how we move through the world.

And somehow, when I think about Dolly Parton, I think…

Yep. Of course she was a yogi. 🧘🏼‍♀️✨💗

Maybe some of the most beautiful expressions of yoga aren’t always found in a studio.

Maybe sometimes they look like a woman with big hair, rhinestones, an enormous heart, and a lifetime spent reminding people that there is plenty of room in this world for us all to shine.✨

With democratic principles being torn away from us weekly, it becomes harder and harder to deliver yoga niceties in the classroom and on social media posts. Phrases like “open to grace”, “be your true self”, “don’t be attached”, “be compassionate” are helpful but the real question for all leaders today is how to speak to the angst that so many of us feel? For those of us who have even a few bones in our body built from sensitivity, care and good will, this is a time of real sorrow and concern. Might it be that we reach deeper inside to find faith? Do we return to the truth that “this too shall pass”? Do we speak out in anger against injustices today? Do we rely on the wisdom teachings that expose the way ignorance, greed and lack of empathy are destructive?

It is likely that we need to do all of these things. We use our practice to build better bones, to stay centered, to build resiliency and resistance. And we acknowledge the sorrow, loss and hurt we feel inside. We feel deeply into the way our heart breaks open. And we resolve to never lose sight of our essential care, kindness and compassion. Each day, be willing to reach out and lend a hand to others, knowing that we are all suffering. And we vow to push back against forces of oppression, greed and injustice. This may include talking to friends, posting messages, voting, marching, writing letters, and holding those in power accountable.

In the Eightfold path of the Buddhist way, it is clear how to do this— via Right Action, Right Speech, Right Livelihood and Right Understanding. The path of the bodhisattva reminds us that we are not a path toward mere self-awakening, but a path that is in service of all sentient beings.
