Is leaking during pregnancy really normal, or have you just been told to accept it?

I get why people believe it. Extra weight, more blood volume, increased pressure on your pelvic floor — and you've probably been told it's just part of the deal.

But common and normal aren't the same thing. It's common to have a headache when you're dehydrated. That doesn't mean your head is supposed to hurt. Leaking is your body signaling that something needs support.

Here's what to do instead:

First, understand that leaking doesn't automatically mean your pelvic floor is weak. It could be weakness, tightness, timing or coordination. If you assume weakness and start doing Kegels, you might be making things worse.

Second, learn to connect your breath to your pelvic floor. When you breathe correctly, your pelvic floor lengthens on the inhale and gently lifts on the exhale. Implementing this one thing correctly can reduce leaking within a week.

Third, don't wait until postpartum. Your body is designed to handle the demands of pregnancy, and if you're experiencing leaking - you can get help! Pelvic physical therapy during pregnancy helps you address issues like leaking and prepare your body for birth and faster recovery afterwards.

And finally, stop doing exercises that make the leaking worse — that's your body telling you it can't handle that load right now. It's not forever, and it doesn't mean you have to stop moving - it just means you need to modify. A good pelvic physical therapist can help you stay active in a way that supports your pelvic floor instead of overloading it.

Don't wait - contact us to get the support you need during pregnancy. See link in bio or book online at the link in our bio.

Is your pelvic pain there because of stress? Here's how to connect the dots.

If you're experiencing tailbone pain when sitting, spasms in your butt, groin pain, ge***al pain, or pain during or after s*x — this is for you.

A busy mind creates a tense pelvic floor. Your pelvic floor is a stabilizing muscle, and stabilizing muscles are anticipatory. That means they respond to your thoughts, feelings and mental state.

It doesn't matter if you're thinking about the future or the past, or if you're happy or upset. Your body thinks it's all happening right now, and it needs to prepare you for it. You may not feel stressed, but your pelvic floor is holding tension anyway.

And a tense pelvic floor can create pain anywhere — abdominals, lower back, hips, glutes, groin, even your neck and jaw.

The first step is understanding the connection between your pelvic floor and your mind. The second is learning how to breathe correctly and coordinate your breath with your pelvic floor, so you can relax your pelvic floor properly.

Within a week of understanding this connection and practicing proper breathing, many of our patients have meaningful pain reduction — before any other work is layered in. That's the power of the mind-body-pelvic floor connection.

If you can’t feel your pelvic floor or you don’t know how to coordinate pelvic floor relaxation with your breathing, book with us at the link in our bio.

We offer in-person pelvic floor physical therapy if you live in the Atlanta area or virtual pelvic health coaching worldwide.

Maybe you've been told it's just what happens after kids, or after pregnancy, or part of getting older. So you worked your life around managing it — planning bathroom breaks, always carrying liners, saying no to things you really want to do because you don't know if there'll be a bathroom nearby.

Here's the truth: silently suffering is what keeps you stuck.

The moment you stop managing your symptoms and start addressing the root cause, your life can open back up. You can stop declining events. You can stop mapping restrooms. You can sleep better. You can laugh without worrying.

The symptoms you've been living with don't have to be permanent.

9You don't need to plan your day around bathroom access. See us at Renew Pelvic Health to get the support you need - we'd be honored to help you! We offer pelvic floor physical therapy in the Atlanta area, and virtual pelvic health coaching anywhere in the world. Link in bio to book.
