NEW PATIENT ALERT 🚨

Entangled in fishing line at the pier, this turtle was brought in for evaluation thanks to the turtle team .

On intake, the turtle was found to be slightly underweight, with bloodwork showing dehydration and an elevated white blood cell count - suggesting inflammation or possible infection.

X-rays revealed a large amount of shell material in the digestive tract, indicating long-term digestive issues consistent with chronic debilitation.

In loggerheads, this is often linked to diet and natural prey items that can sometimes carry parasites contributing to ongoing health decline.

Supportive care is now underway, including fluids, treatment for infection, and close monitoring.

Large amounts of seaweed have washed ashore across many Florida beaches. While seaweed is a natural and important part of the marine ecosystem, excessive accumulations can sometimes create challenges for sea turtles.

This juvenile green sea turtle was recently reported to after becoming caught in heavy seaweed. A quick visit to our hospital revealed that this little turtle was healthy and could return safely back to the ocean the same day!

If you encounter a sea turtle that appears stranded, trapped, injured, or in distress, call a local sea turtle rescue team for help!

Barnacles can tell sea turtle biologists, researchers, and rehabilitation specialists a lot about a turtle’s life - where they’ve been, how they’ve been moving, and most importantly, their overall health. In many cases, a heavy barnacle load can be a sign that a turtle has been sluggish or less active, allowing these small crustaceans to attach and grow quickly across the carapace and even soft tissue.

It’s important to understand that this isn’t something to fix or remove in the field. If you ever come across a sick or injured sea turtle, always call trained professionals.

After many months in our hospital, our patient, Schnitzel was released.

Back in September of 2025, Sea Turtle Adventures, found this turtle clinging to life with fishing line wrapped around its flippers. Line was even ingested, protruding from both the mouth and cloaca. On top of this, Schnitzel suffered from FP (Fibropapillomatosis), which shows as tumors on the body and eyes. But finally, after successfully passing the line, and undergoing tumor removal surgery, Schnitzel has healed and is in tip top shape!

Good luck out there Schnitzel! Safe travels 🫧🐢

And a special thank you to Matt Bucelli for joining us! 📸
