If you want to see more of a behavior, don’t just tell students what you expect.

Give them a target to practice it.

Choose 2–3 specific targets:
👉🏽Respectful speech
👉🏽 Off devices during instruction
👉🏽 Listening while someone else is talking

Then connect those targets to something students actually value…
✅a root beer float
✅a tailgate party
✅social time or
✅another simple class reward.

I use the same strategy with adults.

During a recent training, 150 teachers earned points for mystery targets and worked together toward getting out a few minutes early.

👉🏽They paid attention.
👉🏽They figured out the behaviors earning points.
✅And they met the goal.

Pair that with intentional breaks throughout the day and you’re not lowering expectations.

You’re creating the conditions that make meeting those expectations more likely.
