The 5 Stages of Grief & How Massage Therapy May Help

Grief doesn’t only follow the loss of a loved one. It can come after divorce, illness, injury, job loss, or any major life change. Everyone experiences grief differently, and the stages are not always experienced in order.

💙 Denial – Your body may feel tense or disconnected. Gentle massage may encourage relaxation and body awareness.

💙 Anger – Stress often shows up as tight shoulders, jaw tension, headaches, and muscle pain. Massage may help reduce muscle tension and promote relaxation.

💙 Bargaining – Racing thoughts and anxiety can leave your body feeling exhausted. Massage provides a quiet space to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with the present moment.

💙 Depression – Grief can feel physically heavy. Therapeutic touch may help ease muscle discomfort, improve sleep quality for some people, and support an overall sense of well-being.

💙 Acceptance – Healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It means learning to move forward. Massage can become part of a healthy self-care routine that supports both physical and emotional wellness.

Massage therapy cannot erase grief, but it can provide comfort, reduce stress, and help your body cope with the physical effects of emotional pain.
