This National Volunteer Week, we are celebrating the wonderful hearts who serve at the CHP Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center. Whether they are the warm smile greeting families at our reception desk or the gentle presence visiting at a patient’s bedside, their impact is immeasurable.
We loved getting to celebrate them at our appreciation dinner this week. Thank you for choosing to spend your time bringing comfort to our patients and families!

March is National Social Work Month, and today we want to take a moment to recognize our own Inpatient Hospice Social worker, Laurie Hockenberry.

Whether it’s offering a listening ear, helping navigate complex decisions, or simply being present, her impact reaches far beyond what can be measured.

In some of life’s most difficult moments, social workers show up with compassion, strength, and unwavering support. They advocate for our patients, guide families through unimaginable transitions, and provide comfort when words are hard to find.

We are incredibly grateful for the dedication, empathy, and resilience all of our social workers bring each and every day. Thank you for the difference you make in the lives of our patients and their families. 🩵

Volunteers often grow to feel like family to hospice patients. Volunteers kindness and compassion gives them something to look forward to each time there is a visit. While volunteers sometimes wish they could do even more they are blessed with the gift of time to share insights and memories.

While our patient related volunteers are often seen at the bedside, there’s a dedicated group working quietly behind the scenes- our office volunteers. Supporting hospice in countless ways that make a real difference.

From organizing events and managing supplies to creating educational materials and helping with community outreach, these volunteers ensure the organization runs smoothly and that families and patients receive the care they need—without ever stepping directly into a patient’s room.

Their dedication, time, and heart make hospice stronger every day. Behind the scenes, yet at the very center of what we do. Our volunteers are the heart that keeps hospice moving forward—one act of kindness at a time.
