They described the care they received as “compassionate, professional, and thoughtful,” with every detail handled “with dignity and respect.”

But maybe the most meaningful part was what that care allowed their family to do:

Focus on each other.

Because when you lose someone you love, you shouldn't have to spend every moment worrying about what comes next.

No one teaches you how to go to a funeral.

So you walk in wondering:

What do I say?
Where do I sit?
What if I cry?
What if I say the wrong thing?

Here’s something no one tells you:

You don’t have to be good at going to funerals.

You don’t need the perfect words.

Just show up.

A place may disappear.
The people who made it matter shouldn’t.

In 1959, St. Louis’ Mill Creek Valley neighborhood was demolished, displacing thousands of people from a community they had built together.

Today, the Pillars of the Valley stands where that neighborhood once stood, preserving names, stories, and voices that could have otherwise been lost forever.

Remembrance is more than looking back.

It’s how we make sure a life, a story, or an entire community continues to have a place in the world.

We’re sharing this remarkable project from Coldspring because it’s a beautiful example of what it means to remember.

Located in St. Louis, Missouri, the Pillars of the Valley stands as a powerful tribute to the history of Mill Creek Valley, and the people who once called it home.

At the heart of the installation are eight identical hourglass-shaped pedestals, each measuring 15’ x 4’ x 4’, fabricated from our Mesabi Black® granite. Each pedestal holds a textured V-shaped limestone element, symbolizing the passage of time, memory, and preservation of memory.

If you don’t make the decisions, someone you love may have to.
