William F. Hornick

William Foster Hornick passed away on June 5, 2026, in Clarksville, New York at the age of 80. He was the son of Joseph Stephen Hornick and Cecilia Bernadette Aton Hornick. He was born in his childhood home in Ashley, Pennsylvania during a significant snowstorm. He was named for his maternal grandfather, William Foster Aton.

He was a graduate of Wyoming Memorial High School in Pennsylvania at the top of his class. At Wyoming, he formed many friendships which lasted his entire life. William attended King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He graduated from King’s College in 1967 with a Bachelors of Arts in French/Education.

William taught French and English at Romulus Central School in New York from 1967-1968. It was during that time that he met his future wife, Marie Funicello, an English teacher at another Finger Lakes area high school. William went on to work for General Mercantile Industries in New York City as an investigator before his marriage in 1971. Following a short stay at Korvettes in Colonie, he went to work as a consultant for the former Institute on Man and Science, in Rensselaerville, New York. At the Institute on Man and Science he would hold the positions of Director of Special Projects, planning the summer seminars and Senior Research Associate. He wrote and edited numerous reports, studies and books on a wide range of topics.

In 1983, William returned to teaching and earned his Master’s Degree at the University at Albany. In 1985, he was hired by LaSalle Institute in Troy. During his tenure, he taught seven and sometimes eight levels of French. In 2001, he was named Chair of the Foreign Language Department. While teaching, he published articles on teaching second languages to students with dyslexia, presented at conferences, and earned a scholarship to study at the University of Montreal. He was often recognized by his students and was selected multiple times by the class valedictorian as the most influential teacher. He was always grateful for the letters and visits from former students sharing their accomplishments with him.

Upon his retirement in 2008, William became active in various historical associations. He also kept a promise to himself to return to the hobby of collecting Modern Library editions of classic books. William made numerous contributions and discoveries to the Modern Library’s collector’s website. His collection totals 3,300 books, a third of which are first editions. William often told his students, “The universe is infinite in every direction; choose one.” William attempted to choose them all.

William was predeceased by his parents, his brother John and his wife Nancy, his brother Joseph and his wife Jerri, his sister Sharron, his beloved goddaughter Deborah and his cherished wife of 50 years, Marie Funicello Hornick. He is survived by his son, Daniel and his partner Shannon and their family, Sierra and Elizabeth and great-granddaughter Alara and his son, Adam and his wife Jennifer and the joys of his heart, his grandchildren Brian and Jillian. William asked that his obituary note the boundless pride and infinite respect for Daniel’s and Adam’s character and achievements. The family would also like to extend their most sincere gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate team of the St. Peter’s Hospital Hospice Unit who cared for William in his final days.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026, from 4PM to 7PM at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Avenue, Delmar. Interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in New Salem will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested in his memory to LaSalle Institute, 174 Williams Road, Troy, NY 12180 or the Onesquethaw Volunteer Fire Company Rescue Squad, PO Box A Clarksville, NY 12041.

Karen Scalzo Tierney

Karen Scalzo Tierney, 78, of Slingerlands, NY passed away on Friday, May, 29.

Karen was the definition of strength, light, and love. She cherished all things family and friends. Her laugh was infectious, and her dance moves signature. She loved her role as “The Oldest” of four siblings, and shared the closest of bonds with her parents. She collected friends through every chapter of life, holding each relationship dear. Her high-school sweetheart became her husband of 56 years. Together, they built a welcoming home, hosting gatherings big and small. Karen loved good music, a big bonfire, and stargazing until dawn.

Karen’s favorite roles were mother and grandmother. She effortlessly was both guardian and playmate for her children. As they grew, she was their consummate champion, celebrating every step to adulthood. Karen’s five grandchildren were her favorite humans, and were forever bathed in the glow of her adoration. Their invitations to do, watch, or play anything were always answered with an enthusiastic “yes!”

In the last few years Karen took on the role of caretaker, as her “Constant Companion” suffered from Alzheimer’s. She never left his side, while continuing to be the family matriarch.

Karen is survived by her husband, Bill Tierney, two children, Amy Hayes (Chris), and Bill Tierney (Liz), her five grandchildren: Benjamin Hayes, Emily Tierney, Jane Tierney, Claire Hayes, and Sophia Tierney. She is also survived by her three siblings, Anthony M. Scalzo (Debbi), Maryellen Scalzo Bruno (Dennis), and Jeannie Scalzo (Mitchell Hymowitz).

Karen was one of a kind! Everyone who knew her was touched in an indelible way. May her memory live on in her family and friends.

A wake will be held on Friday, June 5th, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Applebee Funeral Home in Delmar, New York.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 6th, at 11:00 a.m. at Applebee Funeral Home. A celebration of Karen's life will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Karen’s memory to Friends of Five Rivers, supporting the natural environment and educational programs that were meaningful to her, at a special place for all of us.

Sheryl L. Ricciardelli

Sheryl L. Ricciardelli, a beloved educator, compassionate advocate, and devoted family matriarch, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, in Glenmont, NY. Born on September 11, 1947, in Rochester, NY to John and Christine Raymond, Sheryl graced the world with a spirit that illuminated the lives of all who knew her. After an eight-year courageous battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, she surrounded herself with her loved ones as she departed this life, leaving behind a legacy woven with kindness, creativity, and unwavering love.

In 1970 she met the love of her life, Michael Ricciardelli, and they spent the following 56 years devoted to each other and their family.

For 26 remarkable years, Sheryl shared her boundless passion for learning as an elementary school teacher within the Bethlehem Central School District. She paused her career for a decade to raise her children, nurturing their growth with the same care and devotion she brought to her classroom. Teaching was much more than a profession to Sheryl—it was her calling. Known for crafting vibrant units that seamlessly blended reading, writing, math, art, and song, she ignited a spark of curiosity and joy in every child she encountered. Even after retirement, Sheryl’s dedication to teaching endured. Her “Nana’s Pre-school” became a cherished haven where grandchildren blossomed under her guidance. Through planned art projects, lessons in reading, and even crocheting and knitting, Sheryl’s loving mentorship fostered not only knowledge but imagination and confidence. Once a teacher, always a teacher.

Sheryl’s kindness extended far beyond the walls of her classroom. An ardent advocate for those in need, she championed causes close to her heart with quiet strength and compassion. Her tireless support for the deaf community, inspired by her son Kevin, shone as a testament to her empathy and fierce loyalty. Within her church and throughout the community, Sheryl volunteered her time and talents, offering aid to women in shelters, the homeless, and patients in hospitals.

Art and music flowed naturally through Sheryl’s days, expressions of her soul’s beauty and grace. She delighted in singing in the church choir, her voice a beacon of hope and joy. The piano keys sang beneath her fingers, and her canvases captured landscapes from cherished places she had traveled—each brushstroke a vivid memory.

Her family, the center of her world, reflects the depth of her love. Sheryl is survived by Michael Ricciardelli, her loving husband; her children, Kevin Ricciardelli, Lisa Peters (Chuck), and Laura Ricciardelli (Marc Fruscio); her sister Donna Pickard, brother Craig Raymond (Lisa), countless nieces and nephews and her treasured grandchildren, Lucas, Mia, Emma, and Noa. Together, they carry forward her legacy of kindness, strength, and faith.

The many cards and messages received from friends, colleagues, relatives, and loved ones tell a unanimous tale: Sheryl Ricciardelli will be forever remembered for her remarkable kindness. She possessed the rare gift of seeing the good in others, embracing them wholly despite their flaws—a lesson she imparted silently but profoundly to all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her gentle spirit remains a guiding light, inspiring those she left behind to live with greater understanding, compassion, and love.

A visitation honoring Sheryl’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Applebee Funeral Home, located at 403 Kenwood Ave, Delmar, NY 12054. Friends and family are invited to gather and celebrate the gift of her extraordinary life.

Sheryl's funeral service will be held 10:00am Thursday, June 4, 2026 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 85 Elm Ave. Delmar.

Interment will be in the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd. Schuylerville on Friday, June 5th 2026 at 9:00am

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Sheryl L. Ricciardelli’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and immense heart. Though her physical presence is no longer with us, the songs she sang, the lessons she taught, and the love she gave will forever resonate, echoing through the lives she so beautifully touched.

Thomas J. Dvorscak

Thomas (Tom) J. Dvorscak of Voorheesville, NY passed away Thursday morning, May 28, 2026, at age 65. He leaves behind a life of bike rides, crossword puzzles, travel, and love. He passed at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York after a courageous fight against sarcoma.

Tom was born May 2, 1961 to Andrew and Mary Katherine Dvorscak, who welcomed him as their seventh and final child, forever the baby of the family. Tom attended Guilderland High School, received a B.S. from Syracuse University and a Master’s in Counseling from The College of St. Rose. Tom was a beloved high school counselor who worked most of his career at Guilderland High School.

Tom had many things he loved, but none more than his family. He was our thoughtful, kind, funny, and level-headed rock. Tom is survived by his wife, Tami, his soulmate, with whom he celebrated 38 years of marriage. He is also survived by his three children Alexander (Emily) Dvorscak, Michael (Stella) Dvorscak, Katelyn Dvorscak; grandchildren Henry, Margaret, Mariposa, Mary Elizabeth, Thomas; sisters Maryellen (John) Evertson, Suzanne Edmunds; brothers Andrew (Ruth) Dvorscak, Steven (Mark) Dvorscak, Bill (Marian) Dvorscak, Mark (Nancy) Dvorscak; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. He is preceded in death by his parents who he is now reunited with in peace.

It’s very rare to be liked by everyone you’ve ever met, and even rarer to be loved by most of them, but that was Tom. From stopping at a Stewarts, a Hannaford, or often places far from home, there was one constant for Tom’s family: “Oh I know your Father, brother, or husband.” Why? Because no matter who or when he met someone, he always left a positive impact.

As a Dad, Tom was the best. Whether coaching his children in soccer, bringing them on Indian Guide adventures, teaching them how to sand floors and paint walls, or always offering excellent advice, Tom was a constant in their lives. His children promise to always “measure twice & cut once.”

Far from the typical “Dad joke,” there became what is known as the “Tom joke.” Always quick with a pun, a funny movie or tv reference, or just a plain laugh out loud joke, he brought lighthearted laughter with him everywhere he went and eye rolls from his wife.

Family, friends, and all who loved Tom are invited to visit with Tom’s family at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave, Delmar on Thursday, June 4, from 3-7 PM as well as attend a funeral mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Place, Delmar, Friday, June 5, at 10 AM.

Memorial donations can be made in Tom’s name to the Sarcoma Foundation of America to fund research that will benefit all sarcoma patients.

Nelson Cady Harrington

Nelson Harrington, beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, coach, outdoorsman, and mentor, passed away peacefully in 2026 at the age of 87.

Nelson shared 62 years of marriage with his devoted wife, Dondrue Harrington, building a life rooted in loyalty, humor, hard work, and deep family ties. He was the proud father of David Harrington and Dennis Harrington, and the cherished grandfather of four grandchildren (Shana, Jordan, Calvin, and Nina) and four great-grandchildren (Carson, Maysie, Layla, and Jack). He is also survived by his brother, Danforth Harrington.

He was predeceased by his sister, Marylou Higgins, and by his father and mother, Douglas and Mary Elizabeth Harrington.

For 36 years, Nelson taught and coached physical education, including 28 years at the Bethlehem Central School District, where generations of students came to know his discipline, patience, and steady guidance. Teaching was never simply a profession for him; it was the natural expression of who he was. Whether in a gymnasium, on a field, in the woods, or beside a stream, Nelson was always teaching.

An avid archer, angler, and turkey hunter, Nelson spent a lifetime outdoors and became a trusted source of wisdom for countless hunters and fishermen who sought his advice. He believed knowledge was meant to be shared, and he gave generously of both his experience and his time.

He approached both life and death with dignity, determination, and a deep understanding of where to hold on and where to let go. The family would like to extend deep gratitude to the nursing staff at Albany Med who helped us all meet his transition with the same dignity, determination, and awareness.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Lucy Brate Barn on Meads Farm, June 6, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne in Nelson’s memory, where he and Dondrue spent summers volunteering during retirement.

🇺🇸 There was no dampening the community spirit today! The rain stayed away, making it a truly beautiful day for the Town of Bethlehem Memorial Day parade.

Today, we are full of gratitude as we honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. To all who have served, and the families who stood beside them, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your service.

It brought us such joy to see all the kids passing by the funeral home on their way to the parade today, and we loved handing out flags to them! Seeing so many familiar faces lining the streets truly lifted our spirits and reminded us how lucky we are to be neighbors.

Wishing you all a safe, meaningful, and blessed Memorial Day.

We hung our red, white, and blue swags and buntings, our window boxes are full of beautiful red geraniums; and freshened up the grounds here at 403 Kenwood Avenue. It felt like exactly the right way to start the Memorial Day weekend.

Today we remember the men and women who served and gave everything so the rest of us could live freely. We are grateful beyond words.

If you're heading to Bethlehem's Memorial Day Parade, look for us right at the Four Corners. We'll have a table set up on the sidewalk with flags, patriotic removable tattoos, and cold water. Stop by, say hello, and enjoy the parade.

We hope to see you there. 🇺🇸
