VITAS Inpatient Hospice Unit

VITAS Inpatient Hospice Unit If hospice patients need care beyond what can be provided at home, the VITAS inpatient hospice unit is designed to provide necessary and appropriate care.

The staffโ€”physician, registered nurse, social worker, chaplain, volunteer, bereavement specialist, team managerโ€”focus on bringing your symptoms under control with the goal of getting you back to where you want to beโ€”in the comfort of your own homeโ€”as soon as possible. Each VITAS inpatient unit provides a calm, home-like atmosphere. Visits from family, friends and pets are welcome and unrestricted.

There are provisions for family members to spend the night or warm up a home-cooked meal. Each unit provides amenities such as family room, kitchenette and quiet room for prayer, meditation or quiet conversation.

Some moments remind us what person-centered care looks like in practice.๐Ÿ’œ

Recently, our Daytona team had the privilege of celebrating a remarkable milestone with our patient, Bernard, on his 100th birthday. ๐ŸŽ‚

Surrounded by his daughters and the caregivers who know him best, Bernard spent the day sharing stories, laughter, and the quick wit that continues to brighten every room he enters.

One of his favorite surprises was a Snoopy birthday cake, chosen especially for him because Snoopy has long been one of his favorite characters.

For healthcare professionals, moments like these serve as an important reminder that quality care extends beyond managing symptoms.

Hospice teams work to understand each patient's goals, preferences and sources of joy, helping support quality of life while providing comfort-focused care.

It is one example of how hospice care can support connection, dignity and moments that matter throughout a patient's journey.

Happy 100th Birthday, Bernard.๐ŸŽ‰

Dementia can bring uncertainty for families. Understanding how the disease may progress can help make difficult conversations and care decisions a little easier.

The Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) is a framework used by healthcare professionals to assess dementia progression. It describes seven stages of cognitive decline and helps identify changes in memory, reasoning, daily activities and behavior that can occur over time.

Understanding the progression of the disease can help families recognize changing needs and plan for the support a loved one may require.

For nearly 50 years, has provided compassionate care and guidance for patients living with advanced illness and the families who care for them.
