As summer draws to a close (😭), it might be time for you to preg check your cows. The Idexx Alertys OnFarm test is my go to, and has never let me down. Its a simple blood draw from underneath the tail and you can have results in as little as 20 minutes. No sending off the test to a lab required. You do have to purchase the lavender top edta tubes separately.
I'll have links for both the preg tests and the purple top tubes in the comments.

The same is true for the beef side. We see larger and larger carcasses, but we have fewer and fewer cows that will breed back.

🚨 Dr. Temple Grandin just dropped a truth bomb that'll make you rethink everything:

💰 Each lame cow = 800 lbs LOST milk per lactation 💰 $3,800 replacement heifers used for only 2 years 💰 Gentle handling = 3.5-13% production INCREASE

The woman who couldn't speak until age 4 is now telling the entire dairy industry: "We're chasing MAXIMUM when we should aim for OPTIMAL."

Her message? Single-trait selection is creating biological disasters. Heart failure in beef cattle. Fertility crashes in dairy. Sound familiar?

The 2025 AVMA Humane Award winner isn't just talking welfare—she's talking PROFIT.

What's your experience with the "optimal vs maximum" debate? 👇

Not the best photo but bear with me.
In the Wortham Lectures, Dr. Jan Bonsma puts forth the idea that pregnancy hormones in cows cause them to "slick off", or shed their remaining winter fuzz.

I AI'd this cow on the 8th, and she has almost completely slicked off in that time period. I'll have to see if she is in fact pregnant or if this is just the effects of summer, but compared to the other open black cows, they still have peach fuzz.

Great episode highlighting red flags in cattle herds, particularly when looking at potentially purchasing stock. This podcast is available through the Bos Sires Patreon.

New Podcast Alert
The first episode of Shooting the Bull is live… well, the preview is.

If you’ve been feeling like something’s off in the cattle world—you’re not alone.

Patrick Powers sits down with Grant Vassberg and John Atkinson to talk about the red flags no one wants to admit:
– Donor cows that never calve
– Surrogates doing all the work
– Slick marketing trying to cover weak cattle

It’s raw, unfiltered, and miles away from the polished stories the industry keeps telling.

Listen to the preview on all platforms.

Question the noise. Trust the land. Don’t breed nonsense.
