Asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects the airways, causing inflammation and tightening of the muscles around them, which leads to symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.
It is one of the most common chronic diseases, especially among children, with an estimated 363 million people affected worldwide in 2023 and around 25-28 million in the United States.
The exact cause is not fully understood but involves a combination of genetic factors and environmental influences, such as allergies, air pollution, respiratory infections, and exposure to irritants like smoke or dust.
While asthma cannot always be prevented from developing, symptoms and attacks can often be managed and reduced by identifying and avoiding personal triggers (e.g., allergens or cold air), following an asthma action plan, using prescribed inhalers, staying up to date on vaccinations, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
With proper control, most people with asthma can lead active, normal lives.
