Mental health conversations are often surrounded by stigma, and for many, struggling with mental illness brings feelings of shame or fear of judgment. These barriers are especially strong for men, where societal expectations around masculinity can make it difficult—or even feel impossible—to speak openly about emotional struggles.

The impact is profound. In the United States, men die by su***de at a rate more than four times higher than women, and su***de ranks as the 7th leading cause of death among males. Due to harmful stereotypes that discourage emotional vulnerability, men often minimize their symptoms, suppress their emotions, and are less likely to seek support when they need it most.

June is Men’s Health Month—a critical time to shine a light on men’s mental health and break the silence. It starts with early education: teaching children of all genders how to recognize, express, and manage their emotions. By normalizing these conversations from a young age, we can help future generations build healthy coping strategies and create a culture where seeking help is a sign of strength—not weakness.
