Protect your business. Protect your clients.

As postpartum doulas, we are trusted with a family’s most sacred, vulnerable moments. As the digital world shifts, protecting that sacred trust means understanding the tools we use behind the scenes.

It’s easy to look at AI as a quick assistant for writing summaries, organizing notes, or creating resources. But do you know where that data actually goes once you press send?

We are so proud to share a sneak peek of what we’ve been working on: The Rooted Legacy Care AI Literacy Workbook.

This isn't a technical coding guide. It is a practical, heart-centered framework designed specifically for birthworkers and birth professionals. Inside, you'll learn exactly what to - and what NOT to - type into AI chat boxes so you can preserve absolute confidentiality while growing your business with integrity.

Because true legacy care isn't just about how we support families in person; it’s about how we protect them in every single space we operate.

Postpartum support comes with a clear purpose—and clear boundaries.

For postpartum doulas, practical support may include:

Washing bottles and pump parts
Sterilizing feeding supplies as agreed
Keeping the nursery neat and organized
Letting parents know when diapers, wipes, or other baby supplies are running low

These tasks help ease the parents’ workload and keep the baby’s care area ready.

But agreeing to this support doesn’t automatically mean taking on five loads of family laundry or deep cleaning the bathrooms and kitchen.

A helpful way to explain it:
“My household support focuses on the baby’s care areas and feeding supplies, as outlined in our agreement. General housekeeping and deep cleaning aren’t included.”

We can be thoughtful, flexible, and generous in our care while staying clear about the services we provide.

Fellow postpartum doulas: what tasks do you include in your agreement, and which requests have you needed to clarify?

Before you jump into the overnight routine, take a moment to ask:

“What would feel most helpful tonight?” 🤎

For postpartum doulas and Newborn Care Specialists, a familiar routine is a useful starting point, but each day may bring different needs.

Try these three questions at your next shift:

“How has today been for you?”
Give the parent space to share, without pressure to talk.

“Has anything changed since my last shift?”
Review updates to the baby’s care, family preferences, or instructions from their healthcare team.

“What would you like us to prioritize tonight?”
Agree on what’s realistic within your role and the time available.

Sometimes parents want to talk through their day. Sometimes they’re ready to hand over and head straight to bed. Let their response guide the conversation.

Fellow doulas and NCS: what’s your go-to question when you arrive for a shift?

A thoughtful shift handoff is part of great care.

Postpartum doulas and Newborn Care Specialists: before you finish your next shift, try these five simple steps.

Record what you observed.
Include feeding amounts or duration, diaper changes, sleep periods, and settling strategies. Keep notes clear and factual.

Separate observations from guesses.
“She turned away when I offered the bottle” gives a clearer picture than “She didn’t want to eat.”

Share what helped.
Did a quieter room or a familiar soothing routine help? Note the details so the next caregiver can follow the family’s preferences.

Prepare for the next shift.
Restock supplies, organize the care area, and clearly identify anything that still needs attention.

Check in with the parent, too.
A simple “What would feel most helpful before I leave?” makes room for their needs.

Small, consistent habits help families feel supported and caregivers stay connected.

What’s one thing you always include in your shift handoff?

You care for families. Who supports your business?

Postpartum doulas and Newborn Care Specialists know that our work goes beyond the hours we spend with a family.

There are client messages to answer, shift notes to write, consultations to prepare for, and schedules to manage—often between overnight shifts.

At Rooted Legacy Care, I’m making more room here for the professionals doing this work: practical tools, honest conversations, and lessons from postpartum and newborn care.

Whether you’re welcoming your first client or refining a business you’ve built over years, your experience belongs in this conversation.

Who is caring for the mother while everyone adjusts to life with a new baby?

At Rooted Legacy Care, we believe postpartum support should make space for her rest, preferences, nourishment, and emotional needs—with the whole family involved in supporting her.

We’ve created the Mother-Centered Postpartum Care Toolkit for fellow postpartum doulas, available through our digital shop, RootedLegacyTools.

Inside you’ll find practical pages to help you:
• Understand the mother’s priorities
• Plan the first 14 days of support
• Coordinate meals, rest, and family responsibilities
• Organize visits and leave clear handoff notes

The toolkit includes an editable Word document, a printable PDF, and a fictional completed example to help you get started.
